  I served on a submarine in the early nineties and we used to watch Red October and Das Boot while on deployment. &nbsp;It&apos;s pretty surreal to watch submarine movies when you are actually underwater on one. &nbsp;We all loved Red October, and didn&apos;t care about inaccuracies, and we truly loved and appreciated Das Boot, since it was so realistic. &nbsp;I recommend Das Boot for sure. &nbsp;You&apos;ll feel like you just completed a war patrol after watching that movie.

  It was Scott Glenn (Captain of the Dallas) who acted as commander of the USS Salt Lake City for diving drills. The actual commander, Commander Tom Fargo, fed Glenn the commands through an earpiece. Glenn was so impressed by Fargo that he based his portrayal of Mancuso off of Fargo.

  The Soviet Navy is quite international. &nbsp;Red October has a Scottish captain, Kiwi XO, British doctor, Belgian engineer... &nbsp;Konovalov has a Swedish captain...

  I&apos;m glad you understood the term &quot;Defect&quot;. Many other reactors didn&apos;t understand and thought Red October was going to launch missiles all the way to the end.

  Tom Clancy is one of my favorite writers. I love his book Red Storm Rising
