I recently learned, that in Austria there are Nuri sardines in almost every supermarket for the equivalent of 4$.

Having been to the factory, I can tell you: both are the same.<br><br>It supposedly comes down to where they are going. Pinhais is meant to be available in specialised stores mainly whereas Nuri can be bought in some supermarkets (especially in Austria) so it's all marketing placement, or so I was told.<br><br>As for the number on the back, we've long thought it was the day of production but were told it is actually just the batch number. If the first mackerel of the year is canned in march, it'll still be 001/20**. Also, year on can is year of production and year on wrapping is "best before end of-"<br><br>You should visit Pinhais someday!

What am I even doing here. I don't even like deenz, but the quality of video, deep explanation, cadence, and "reading rainbow" background music. Goofy, quality, educational. A true gem in the sea of youtube, keep it up!

My wife and I just toured the Pinhais cannery in Matosinhos and did a tasting there today. The way it was explained to us was that the Pinhais stock used for those tins comes from boats that work off the coast of Matosinhos itself. The rest of the stock that is brought in to the cannery can come from anywhere in Portugal. There is a sardine season, and a time to let the ocean stocks rest and recuperate- that’s when they can the other types of fish like mackerel. They also sold cans of sardine roe at the factory store, which they harvest when the ‘Dines are all egged up, but at 40€ a can I didn’t want to chance it based on vids I’ve seen. It was a super fun tour and amazing to see how family and friend oriented the factory is- employing generations of workers from the same families since the company founding in 1920. Super cool.
