The biggest irony I find is that the British divided us and went away.. but Indians and Pakistanis live in harmony in London (and other cities/countries) and we are fighting with each other here

Kunal, I think you invited the wrong Gandhi expert on the show. While the episode was interesting, it missed depth and accuracy on key points. One area I want to highlight is the strategy of non-violence.

Non-violence wasn’t just moral idealism—it was deeply strategic too. Many today see Gandhi as emotional and Patel as the pragmatist, yet Patel stood by Gandhi for over three decades. That loyalty speaks volumes.

Gandhi preferred the term Satyagraha—“insistence on truth.” He understood that the British ruled India not through overwhelming force, but through a system of Indian intermediaries. A few thousand ruled the whole subcontinent. Army and police were largely Indian. So violence against who ? Fight our own people ? So the real struggle was not just against foreign rulers, but against our own complicity and divisions. If the Indians insisted on truth (satyagraha) and did not cooperate with British, British would be forced to leave. As Gandhi said "the power of the ruler is derived from the obedience of the people"

Random acts of violence as we all know were indeed attempted—but they were swiftly and brutally crushed. The British controlled the army and police. You were either eliminated or exiled to the Andamans. Violence only played into their hands. It would never allow a nationwide united movement to flourish easily. There is a reason the violent reactionaries did not succeed. And even if they did the risk of being taken over by violent gangs for their own purpose was near certain.

What Gandhi built instead—by the 1930s—was a mass movement with a presence in every corner of India, without the help of radio, TV, or the internet. Even Subhash Chandra Bose acknowledged this reach. Non-violence allowed for broad, disciplined nationwide organization by taking a morally upright position right under the nose of British before they recognised it to be a threat.

There was also a moral and global impact. Gandhi’s approach exposed the hypocrisy of British imperialism to its own citizens. By late 1930s, public opinion had shifted. Clement Attlee won the election on a promise to grant India independence—defeating world war 2 here Churchill, who still clung to the empire.

While most of the countries in Asia/Africa regressed back to autocracy as soon as they got independence, democracy in India survived (at least for many decades ;-)). Bertrand Russel credited the utopian nature of Indian freedom struggle for it - which I believe is very true. As important as it was to win freedom, it was important as Gandhi said not to replace the White Sahib with Brown Sahib.

This wasn’t naivety. It was clarity, discipline, and vision. And it deserves a more informed telling. William Shirer - the few legendary journalist from Chicago tribune - who covered the movement on the ground in 1930/31 - said he had never come across a more saintly man or a even subtler politician than Gandhi. May others have echoes the same sentiment.

Last week we were travelling in Bali Indonesia, I met an temple curator, attracted my attention refering Gandhi ji. I was amazed by his knowledge and understanding about Gandhi ji. The discussion was brief and emotional. His every word kept reverberating with me.

Incidentally I am currently reading Gandhi: The Years That Changed the World by Ramachandra Guha, I was amazed by Mridula Mukerji's ability to brilliantly encapsulate Gandhi’s essence in just 80 minutes. ❤️
