  The reason why Charles XII. went on the attack at Poltava even though he was badly outnumbered was that he assumed he was still facing the same russian army he&apos;d smashed several times before, a de-facto medieval force composed of peasant levies with minimal training. What he got instead was the thoroughly reformed professional army of Peter the Great. Ol&apos; Pete had a <i>large</i> number of flaws but an unwillingness to learn from defeat or a reluctance to adopt foreign ideas weren&apos;t among them.

  Regarding the Soviet Afghan war there was an incredible battle fought in 1988 called the Battle for Hill 3234. The <br>Soviets were heavily outnumbered and almost every man in the 39 man unit was wounded with 6 being killed. Every<br>man of this unit was given medals with 2 of them getting the Hero of the Soviet Union Posthumously.
