love the idea that repair only works when we stop abandoning ourselves and come back to the relationship as whole people.

I need to tell you: when I was at the worst point in my substance use, in my worst panic attacks on stimulants, I would listen to your voice to calm me down through the storm of my psyche. Deep in the throes of addiction, I would remember to plug in my headphones to listen to your channel. There's no way to express my feeling of debt and gratefulness for you. Thank you!<br>Edit: sober since december 28th 2024 💪

Glad you're back. About a year ago I went through the worst depressive episode/midlife crisis of my life, also losing my job, my mom, my home, my car, and my credit rating. And here I still am, living with my widowed dad and driving an ugly but drivable car and working a fun part-time job while interviewing for full-time with benefits still. Your videos on depression and healing really helped me along the way, and I wish you all the luck on your healing journey.

Relationships can actually grow stronger when both people are willing to take responsibility and rebuild trust.

Fundamentally, it requires both parties to want to work on it. If one perpetually does not take accountability and shows no interest to resolve the conflict in a healthy manner, then nothing can be repaired. When a rupture happens it takes a lot more effort to repair and it is easier to walk away.

Developing a mature relationship starts with co-regulated handling of conflict, rupture and repair. And that's just the beginning of what you had hoped for. When two independent people with secure attachment (either "native"--normal healthy development, or "earned"--therapeutic level growth) begin to work toward the greater good of the relationship itself, their connection evolves into a living creation that continuously enhances the family, the community, the future, and a deeply centered happiness along the way. Differences (that don't become self-defensive) become doors that open up new perspectives and possibilities that a mature relationship in unity has the capacity to make coherent and act on, so everyone wins.

Your videos have been so incredibly helpful as I recover from an abusive childhood and abusive marriage. I'm finally in a healthy relationship and it's hard! I have to be vulnerable and stand up for myself and practice all these new relational skills that were never modeled for me and were genuinely unsafe before. My partner and I went through a really difficult time a few months ago and instead of running away or getting angry, we got curious with one another and I feel so much closer to her as a result. I didn't know it was possible to get closer to someone through conflict

I had a 25 yr marriage of avoiding conflict (maybe blowing up once every 5 years). It was fatal. I suppressed to the point of feeling way more comfortable and authentic when he was not around.
