I always find it interesting when someone from today or even from a different culture try to interpret what people thought in centuries past.

People should be free to be what they really are, but it's irrelevant what people used to do. Fight for your rights to be what you want to be now. Even if it's unprecedented.

5:40 Homosexuality as an orientation is not a modern invention. The Greeks did not treat same‑sex desire merely as a category of acts; they discussed it openly as a category of persons. Aristotle, in the Politics, refers to men who habitually seek relations with other men, distinguishing a class of individuals on the basis of their characteristic pattern of desire and then speculating about the causes of that disposition. This is not an act‑based taxonomy; it is a person‑based one.

In Plato’s Symposium, in Aristophanes’ speech, we find an explicit taxonomy of sexual orientations: some men are drawn towards a male companion, some women towards a female one, and some men and women are drawn towads the sex that is opposite to theirs. The framework is unmistakably about the direction of desire, not about isolated behaviours. It presupposes that erotic longing can be fundamentally oriented — that individuals possess stable patterns of attraction that define them.

It happened & was talked about, but it was rarely socially acceptable in most cases. This is more theory than fact, & seen mostly through a modern lense. In many cultures men have been allowed to hug & kiss each other, it usually was not sexual.
