I went to an Air Show in 1969 when I was 16Yrs. A Lightning came down the runwa @ 50 ft, tipped on it's arse  and went VERTICAL. Literaly. I watched it as long as I could see it. When I lost sight, it was STILL climbing. One of the most impressive sightts I have ever experienced. The climb from level flight took a moment. Slap the stick back, become a Spaceman. That vision will never die.

Suffice to say, Egypt-based reconnaissance Mig 25's that had been regularly overflying Saudi Arabia stopped immediately when the Saudi's re-equipped with Lightnings.....

By 1973, the lightning had been updated with an auxilary fuel tank under the fuslage, and air refuelling capability, so was not limited to minutes of flight time like the early models of the early 60's.

As a lad we use to bike out to RAF Binbrook  from Grimsby and watch  lightnings take off on intercept missions over the  North Sea. They screamed and took off then went vertical and just disappeared  into the Blue over the North Sea. We also use to bike to Humberston where there was a Bombing range, The planes use to come up the Humber  maybe 50 feet of the water and aim for the Targets on the sands, many times we saw Other planes on exercises, We saw Star fighters trying to catch lightnings and Phantom's, Then the Tornado came out. We were lucky we lived in an area where they use to do low level runs, Even today they  practise low level flying , Airbus A'400M, A few Hercules (fat Alberts). That's the Benefit of living in Bomber County.

As a ten year old in the sixties we would watch the lighting take of from RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus and then go straight up!!! amazing aircraft!

It's said that the Lightning was short of fuel by the time it had taxied to the end of the runway. Very little of its performance "limitations" were actually fact, they were estimated and with great inaccuracy. Above M2.5 the MiG 25's engines turned the aircraft into a 15 tone glider in about 5 minutes. I don't know how true it is but I heard a rumour that Belenko's Foxbat was taken completely apart to see what was so special and when Russia demanded it back it was returned dismantled.
