In over 50 years of watching this movie, never did I think there was a Hemi under the hood.  But I figure out that the bulldozer crash car was a Camaro after countless viewings, long before the internet confirmed it.

Man, Vanishing Point isn’t just a car movie — it’s a time capsule. That white Challenger blasting across the desert still gives me chills every time. Hard to believe all those cars were crushed… feels like part of movie history vanished with them.

“The only way to reach the vanishing point is to vanish yourself.” That line hit harder than expected. The film isn’t just about speed — it’s about chasing something you can never catch. That’s cinema poetry on four wheels.

In the early 1980s I had the immense pleasure of meeting Carey Lofton, who drove the Challenger as well as the Jaguar with another stunt driver in the Challenger in the race scene. It was at a gym in Santa Monica where many stuntmen worked out. He was extremely gracious and allowed me to pick his brain for almost 45 minutes. I had bought a brand new 70 Challenger as a 19 year old, one year before the movie came out. Mine had the 440 as well and I could have wallpapered my bedroom walls with all the speeding tickets. I told him about being clocked doing 134 mph by a CHP helicopter on the eastbound I-10 just outside of Indio, CA. He laughed. That's when he opened up. Told me pretty much what was mentioned here. I had bought the soundtrack and hadn't noticed until he told me to look at the cover. They'd long run out of 70 Challengers by then and had to use a white '71 for the album. Wish I'd kept my Challenger. Sold I after I bought a new 4x4 and a '68 Corvette ragtop with an L46 350/350.  Still  think about that Mopar kick in the pants. That movie will forever be ingrained in my brain.

As a 13 year old at the time the movie came out , I saw immediately that the death scene car was a Camaro.

I  saw vanishing point on my first date. I said to myself I would have one of those challengers. A few years later after Army basic training I found a Hawaiian  Bronze one in a used car lot in Monterey CA.   I drove it for ten years before I traded it in.  One of the worst mistakes of my life.

Being a car guy, l saw the Camaro right away, if only because the hood that goes flying has the ice cube tray inserts of the SS Camaros.
