  The Romulans were always portrayed as very scientifically/technologically inclined in general so they would probably stand a better chance against the Borg than a lot of other races like the Klingons, Orions, Nausicaans, etc. Their more flexible ethics would probably also allow them conduct more extreme experiments that would be illegal in the Federation.

  I always thought that the disappearance of the Romulans before TNG started, then their re-appearance with new, much larger, much more powerful ships, was a direct result of them encountering the Borg. The Star Empire certainly couldn&apos;t deal with both the Borg and the Fed at the same time - and since the Fed and their Klingon allies weren&apos;t an immediate threat, they disappeared from local events to deal with the Borg threat.<br><br>This would include the use of such an unstable, unsafe use of artificial singularities as a new, far more powerful power source. As well as their new ships that were larger than the Galaxy class - but hardly meant for deep space exploration.<br><br>I&apos;ve also wonder, that if it wasn&apos;t for the Dominion War, the Romulans would have had more time and resources to study the Borg tech that they had captured or found and could have become far more dangerous to the Federation. But when they ended up needing to side with the Fed against the Dominion, they had to put everything they had into the war effort.

  Wolf 359 would have been the equivalent of Dunkirk. There&apos;s no way the Romulans wouldn&apos;t know about it in detail. There would have been reports there within days.

  It makes perfect sense to me that the Romulans would have other captured Borg vessels - or at the very least fragments - aside from the Artifact.<br>That would also explain why they were open to inviting the Federation and others to study it. It was a strategic effort to be able to benefit from other factions&apos; knowledge of the Borg, in order to further their own independent studies. Throw out a big enough <i>bait</i> and promise you&apos;re <i>totally very much completely honest this time for sure</i> and they&apos;ll let their guard down and share almost everything. Meanwhile you can use everything you&apos;ve learned from that slow and methodical study to crack into your other projects much more recklessly, to prototype advancements the others hadn&apos;t even conceived of yet...

  After watching ST:Voyager s04e14 &quot;Message in a bottle&quot;, and learning of the Hirogen sensor network that stretches all the way to the edge of the Alpha Quadrant, and that is powered by quantum singularities, I suspect the Romulans discovered this sensor network, studied the technology, and then used that knowledge to build their own quantum singularity power sources.

  The Star Trek novel &quot;The Return&quot; detailed a Romulan-Borg alliance (with Borg representative &quot;Vox&quot;), and involved characters from TNG, TOS and DS9, as well as James T. Kirk!

  A post fallen Borg universe, set in the main timeline after Voyager got home would be an interesting thing to explore. I&apos;d like to see Hugh again, plus an interaction with him and 7 would be interesting as well. There&apos;s a lot left to still to discover and dive into.
