They didn't smile because a smile held long enough for a photographic exposure then looked more like a grimace or fake. They also considered a smile to be too informal. Smiling for photographs did not become popular until Hollywood publicity photos of the 1930s.

I adore these sweet loving old couples. My own great, great, great grandfather John Arnold was born 1787/88 in Laughton sussex. Became Bailif on local farm and got himself photographed in Reeves photography in Lewes (still in existance). I have a photocopy of that occasion. Wearing his shepheards smock, gaiters and an authoratative top hat standing by a painted rural backdrop he is smiling. He was a very old man then so i will treasure this delightful record of darling grandad John .❤

I don't know if someone realizes that the first lady shown here, Ms. Hannah Stilley Corby, was 10-y.o. when Mozart was born, and 68-y.o. when Beethoven's 9th symphony was premiered. ! It's just absolutely stunning!

I do enjoy your content. It’s really neat seeing these photographs come to life. And the narrator’s voice is perfect for this.
