Tragic either way. Back then steal a penny be sentenced to 30 days hard labor. Today loot an entire store, hijack cars, gang attacks are all symtoms of social inequality, sentence one minuet of self-examination and a promise not to do it again.

Well presented piece of history. I fear so many of the old ways are returning. We Americans aren’t always very kind to our children, especially if they seem “foreign” or are poor and in desperate circumstances. Thank you for this fine, historical and beautifully enhanced documentary. ❤

The punishment of hemp rope picking had a practical purpose. The picked (apart) hemp rope was called 'oakum' and was used in the wooden boat and ship industry as caulking between wooden hull planks. The oakum hemp was hammered in place and when it got wet it swelled and sealed the joints. On the wooden planked decks hot tar was payed out on top of the oakum to seal the joints.

The exploitation of and cruelty towards children by criminal gangs is a problem as old as time. Back in those times, children were sent out pickpocketing. They were given a quota to reach and if they failed, they were beaten and deprived of food etc. That kind of thing is still going on today!. There are very likely more slaves today than there were in the 1800s.

Thankfully today these kids are treated more as victims and the adults are brought to justice. Back then, these gangs knew the kids would take the fall.

When one was caught, they were simply replaced with another child from the slums. Parents often had no choice but to turn a blind eye or even encourage their children to take up these 'jobs'. Many children landed up working in factories or mills or in the workhouse if they were lucky, and those places were bad enough but not quite as bad as landing up in the hands of these Fagan characters!.

History like this, with its unbelievable amount of suffering, makes a solid case for antinatalism.
