Westernized Asian parents can eventually lose the scarcity mindset, but the fear of the future always remains. It’s why they never stop being on your case about good grades and college. Once you’re close to finishing college, they bombard you with questions about marriage and grandchildren, despite telling you your entire life up to that point to not date in the interest of grades! If they don’t like your partner for any reason, likely health or money related, they never stop screaming at you about it. Your happiness is not a consideration.

My parents hate my wife for being overweight. They keep bemoaning that our family tree will end by next generation because of it. You can imagine I’m not a fan of going home to see them. Funnily enough, my wife also grew up in a scarcity mindset household, and so is overweight because of it. There’s a lot to unpack with our respective therapists.

I had a international event at my university with free food. There is a mix of nationalities. The Chinese international students would take a full plate of food and only eat a quarter of it. While the people who comes late has nothing to eat. That’s just greedy. Makes no sense to me

I think the saddest irony is the way they rush and grab and hoarde is driving the very deprivation they innately fear which in turn kind of perpetuates it all even more.

what pisses me off is when they put so much food on their plate but didn't finish it.

My grandmother was a teenager during WW2 when the US was firbombing Japan. She remembered starving, this evolved into her making it her enjoy life and living as much as possible. "You should eat when you are hungry" was something she would often say to me even as demetia took her mind. Why when she died my family all agreed that the best way to honor her was to have fun and eat good food. Its crazy to think that sacrcity would lead to so radically different mindsets.

I am am chef here in a relatively less traveled to part of Japan and our cafe had a policy that a meal comes with soup and your choices of rice or bread, with unlimited refills, as much as you liked.

The policy is now 3 max because we found a mainland tourist was hiding bread rolls in their bag and got mad ans started screaming at the poor waitress who said they couldn't be given refills due to such.

I understand that life was scary and its ingrained into many people to gather what you can, but please be considerate to us who are working and trying our best to please all guests.

I dated a 1st generation Chinese Canadian. He moved out of his parents' house partly because of his mother's hoarding. He lived in a very sparsely furnished apartment on purpose to not fall into the patterns he didn't like about his mom. She kept trying to bring food to store at his apartment because she ran out of room in her kitchen. She would travel across the city to get food that was on sale despite the enormous amount of time involved. He frequently tried to help her stop this behaviour but he was met with angry outbursts. They kept asking whether I was asking him for money or I could support myself. They had no trust in my intentions. And yet they were also frequently at the casino losing way more money than they saved by going across town for a discount on bread. Whenever my scarcity mindset kicks in I remember these behaviours that to me seemed illogical.

Me and my mates were staying at a hotel and there were a group of Chinese tourists. Our hotel is not 5 star and offered average continental breakfast items. When the breakfast buffet opened, the Chinese tourists pushed themselves ahead of everyone, rushed to the buffet, and took all of pastries, eggs, etc. We literally had to drink water while waiting for the hotel staff to restock the buffet. And when we left, the trash cans were full of wasted food bc the Chinese tourists couldn't finish what they'd gotten

I am not Chinese even remotely, but I was raised in many ways by my grandparents. They were children of the Great Depression. Grandpa was a farmer, Grandma was an urbanite who moved 13 times before finishing the 3rd grade, and was surrendered to an orphanage along with her sister for a year. Her mother managed to remarry during that time, and finally returned and retrieved them.
Anyway, I hear the words "waste not, want not" in my head all the time. "A penny saved is a penny earned" every time I see one on the ground, and "use it up, wear it out. Make it do, or do without" are the soundtracks of my scarcity mindset.

My mom grew up in the Soviet Union, and was an adult during its collapse. Meaning she had to make ends meet when there aren’t many jobs, corruption was rampant, and scarcity of food and basic commodities.
She told me stories how one week there’s butter, so people only bought what they needed for the week. But next week there was no butter, meaning the next time it appeared. People bought tons more than they needed.
It bred a new mindset of being greedy, because there might not be a chance to get it.

Before she said you only ever bought groceries for the same week, since fridges wasn’t supper wide spread. So you only ever got what you needed or was gonna bake the same day. So bread was bought daily fresh and crispy.

She liked living in the Soviet Union for a long time, until the corruption ruined the community and mindsets of people. To this day she despises people who take more than they need, since those types of people caused her and her family to struggle.

And due to how Chinese people tend to look greedy, she tends to not like them. Loves their food and cities, but their attitude, big no for her.

It’s interesting how events change people
