  If I had a nickel for every time a young brunette called out for a supernatural force to help them in their time of neglect and loneliness and then got a villainous man, I&apos;d have three nickels from Nosferatu, Phantom of the Opera, and Labyrinth.

  I think Orlok showing up when Ellen calls out in the dark with desperation in her voice just sort of hits home that abusers will exploit lonely, vulnerable people who are seeking connection and acceptance. She asked for an angel, not a monster, he just showed up as a wolf in saviors costume.<br><br>Ellen is not anymore “evil” than any other abuse victim, cult survivor, trauma survivor etc - Orlok just sniffed out the right the victim at the right time.

  That scene with Ellen and the professor, with the tear running down her cheek... <br><br>He&apos;s telling her she&apos;s a hero, or will be. And all I see in her face is how much she doesn&apos;t want to be. She knows she will do it. She knows she can. But she doesn&apos;t want to be. Which I think is the power behind reluctant heroes when done well--they will do it despite the fact that they desperately just want to live a simple life.

  I think it&apos;s important to note that the film is also a genuine love story between Ellen and Thomas. Orlok acts as the physical manifestation of shame, repression, and abuse, a sort of Jungian shadow. While he is meant to be a seductive force, it is also made perfectly clear that his existence is purely parasitic in nature. Ellen&apos;s sacrifice in the end is ultimately made not because she desires above all to be with Orlok, but because she chooses Thomas over his influence.

  I really appreciate this film so much for making Orlock UGLY AS HELL, literally rotten to the core, and trusting that the audience will be seduced while being scared out of their mind like Ellen was. I’m so happy that they didn’t “cop out” and make him conventionally hot. That would have been too easy, and nothing about this movie should be easy.

  And that&apos;s why Horror is a genre that NEEDS to exist. Being able to feel and see scary things not everyone lives is so instructive. <br>Everyone can learn from those movies. Of course this one is very deep, but most horror movies have a really powerful message to give.

  I love how this movie didn&apos;t shy away from making Orlok a true iredeemable monster. They didn&apos;t pull a &quot;he&apos;s misunderstood&quot; and/or &quot;evil but could be redeemed&quot;. Even if you take away the being a vampire/supernatural horror and leave him as a mortal man, he&apos;s still a very evil, abusive villain. He&apos;s vindictive, sadistic, selfish, violent and manipulative. He saw a suffering young girl, took advantage of her loneliness and robbed her of her innocence, and plagued her her entire life, not out of love or loneliness, but because he thinks he owns her. And the saddest reality is that there are real people out there in the world who are just as monsterous, the only difference is that unlike Orlok who&apos;s evil manifests into his horrific appearance (kudos to the movie&apos;s hair/makeup/costume team), they hide behind very human faces.

  The “Keep away from me, I am unclean!” line being responded to with “Never!” made me bawl like a baby. I suffered through SA in a past relationship; the shame my ex and even people around me attributed to me because of what he had done was unbearable. It still is, but therapy and meds help immensely - hopefully someone someday will see me for who I am and not what was done to me.
