  I was shocked at the end when it's revealed that Tom Holland is Jack, finally case closed.

  I remember years ago a criminologist said that on Judgement Day St Peter will ask The Ripper to identify himself and when he does all the Ripper experts will turn to each other and say "who?"

  Forget royalty, toffs in opera cloaks, and bloody awful conspiracy theories, he was a local guy. I agree when they say he could have worked in a knacker's yard, butchers, or a slaughter house, Smithfield is just down the road, so a likely possibility.

  My issue with the royal/aristocracy/doctor suspects are that it smacks of snobbery, like those that think shakespeare didn't write his plays because he wasn't educated or from nobility.

  Reminds me a bit of Joan Smith's argument that the other ripper, the Yorkshire Ripper, would have been caught a lot sooner if the cops had understood that they were looking for an ordinary guy not that different from them. She says they kept saying things like, 'We'll know him when we find him,' as if they expected him to have warts, snaggle teeth and an evil eye. In fact, they interviewed him nine times and let him go before he was arrested.

  Worth noting that Eddie Campbell, the artist that Alan Moore worked with on From Hell, agrees that the William Gull theory does nothing but besmirch the good name of an important doctor of his time.  Moore originally focused on Gull because he worked well with the themes Moore wanted to present, not because he thought Gull was actually the murderer; but as he wrote the series, Moore seems to have convinced himself that his fictional account was actually true!
