Crikey... Exhibition Road has certainly changed since I was a physics student at Imperial in the late 60s (along with a young Brian May!). I saw Benny Hill a number of times walking down Queens Gate and assumed he lived nearby. As for the Albert Hall - the 1967 concert with Jimi Hendrix and Pink Floyd (with Syd Barrett), Cream's farewell concert in 1968, Frank Zappa, Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac & BB King, Led Zeppelin to mention a few. Happy Days!
However, my first memory of the Albert Hall was in 1953 when at a charity event at the age of 5, I had to bow and present a purse of money to an elderly Royal family member. I became lost in the corridors on the way back to my parents. I still recall the terror!

As a lad, I used to go to the Science Museum at least once a year.
When one of our old Scout Leaders used to take a new group of kids to visit it I would often tag along, and one of his old favourite sayings, when walking through the Space wing that houses the missiles and rockets, was, "I made that!", as we went past one of the rockets.

He was the late Dr John Alan Rolfe, and he was one of the designers and engineers of the British Black Arrow
satellite launch rocket , based at the time at Westcott in Buckinghamshire.
Lovely man and greatly missed.

As a cycle courier, I can honestly say that shared spaces for traffic and pedestrians are a stupid idea. They rely on everyone being aware, which they definitely are not.
Great video, John.

The RAH in summer evening light is one of the most beautiful sights in London. I've been going to the Proms for decades, and it never gets old.

Loved this episode! In 1983 after high school I lived and worked at a youth hostel in Chelsea and South Kensington was my tube station.
It’s a special area of the city.
As far as Royal Albert Hall memories go, I snagged a last minute ticket to see Siouxsie and the Banshees with Robert Smith of the Cure on guitar. We visited again in 2023 and it was precisely as I remembered it. Thanks again, John.

Thanks for showing and mentioning the RCA, so often ignored, and seldom shown, but responsible for so many famous (and clever but not so famous} artists and designers. Also - Albert Hall concert - Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention ......I wouldn't give the date even if I could remember.

Great video. I'm sure it was called The Natural History Museum when we did school visits in the 70's 🤔

Another excellent video, thank you! My Albert Hall moment is Spiritualized performing ‘Ladies and Gentlemen we are floating in space’ closely followed by Killing Joke and Echo and the Bunnymen playing there 😊

Hi John. What a wonderful post. Thank you. My best memory of Royal Albert Hall was when I was doing and going to do some security work off Gloucester Rd ( about 06:30am) I noticed 3 elderly women standing out one of the entrances, (what looked weird) ..then, the door opened and out came queen Elizabeth ll and (then) Prince Charles. Obviously they must had a private show of sorts for just them. The most surprising thing was that there was no visible security there. an amazing sight very early on that morning.

Great video as always. As a young apprentice technician commuting from Upton park everyday and working at Imperial for around 8 years, it never fails to bring back great memories of what a fantastic place and time that was in the 70's. Were you aware that the Queens tower, which you must have walked past when cutting through Imperial, also lines up with the Albert memorial and Albert Hall. When Imperial was first built it consisted of 4 long halls with the Queens tower in the centre. In fact when they knocked down the original building it destabilised the tower as it was never designed/built to be self-supporting. The chemistry building was one of the last original buildings when I was there. The labs had the big wooden worktops that were waxed and it had its own glass-blowing workshop. Having lunch at the science museum staff restaurant or taking a stroll around the serpentine or popping into one of the museums. Best job ever.
