  For those wondering why there's no zinc in the oil. It is because most larger diesels of this size use silver-plated bearings, and Zinc is corrosive to silver.

  That locomotive was used/sat at the CSX training center in ATL for years. Kevin Wood (RIp) worked at the training center and tried, as best he could, to keep that loco in shape. During the initial days of Hunter Harrison taking over CSXT, Tilford yard and the Training center were deemed expendable. (Shots sighted). So the word came down to close both, and scrap almost everything not tied down. The 8954 was one of those items. Kevin approached me about saving it, and I was successful to work the system to save the loco. The truth is, I had it on my list to save, but was overwhelmed with other things to save. The 8954 came within 6 days of being scrapped on site. I was able to get it out of there and to the museum in Duluth.

  I've run 8954 in years past when it was still blue and gray and I shot what became its last mainline run in the lead. It's a personal favorite of mine. Kevin isn't forgotten for all he did with it as well. Ironically the 5704 just came by you last night on the way to Spencer.   I've seen several of the guys items from California. They're doing a good job too.  Quite a bit went into getting 5704 saved and repainted, even from the model railroad side in the form of Steven Priest.

  Allen, I could be wrong but I think this may be unique YouTube content, i.e. the oil change on a large diesel locomatice. Great job, as always.

  Rail engines in the UK here, we had trouble with turbos blowing themselves up due to oil starvation, so it's great to see that little dedicated pump. Thanks for the insights into your locos over there.

  Thank you for this incredible video! I grew up in the 1950s and 1960s with 567s (usually not turbocharged but with twin Roots blowers). I worked for the NYC and the B&O south of Chicago. Love seeing this familiar old iron. Thanks kindly.
