  My mother had fertility problems and people said some very cruel things to her, even family members. So this story hit close to home for me. At least my mother did not have newspapers and a royal court watching every month. Soraya refused the second wife arrangement and I respect her for that... she would not accept half a marriage just to keep a crown.

  “He gave her everything except the only thing she wanted.” That line stayed with me. Money can pay for a Paris apartment but it cannot sit beside you at night or call you mother. Poor Soraya 😢

  My aunt could not have children and her husband’s family treated her like she had failed some kind of test. This was in the 1980s not the 1950s. So when people say “that was just the time”... no, some of this thinking is still with us. Poor Soraya 😢

  Oh that poor Queen! To have lost 2 loves in her short life. It leaves an ache in one&apos;s soul. I remembered hearing about her in the 80&apos;s and again later after the 2000&apos;s she deserved so much more. I knew about her hateful mother in law. I did see a movie about her life, once, long ago. I&apos;ve seen people give those back handed compliments to women who couldn&apos;t have children and even endured those nasty comments made to people like me who CHOSE never to bring them into the world. My heart goes out to her OH and her poor brother who couldn&apos;t seem to go on without her. May they both have found some peace now!

  A very moving documentary but I think the Shah is being made into a colder man than the situation really allowed. Iran needed an heir under the constitution of that time. He apparently tried other solutions and clearly loved her. That does not make the divorce right or painless, but a king cannot always live as an ordinary husband. Both of them were trapped.

  The photograph at the beginning and ending was a beautiful way to tell this. Just a 17 year old girl sitting still because somebody asked her to... no idea that one picture was about to decide the next 50 years of her life. We all have photos from before everything changed, but we usually don&apos;t know it at the time. That thought gave me chills.
