No body in India bothered to ever ask whether he was a British or a Persian or a Jew or a Hindu. All we know is that he was a legendary general and my Father (who was a soldier himself) adored him.

He was known for his sense of humour. Once, while in civies, he saw a newly recruited officer struggling with his luggage and offered to help. The officer who had just come to join had no idea who he was and he handed him his luggage. He asked Sam Maneckshaw what he did there. He replied, 'My job here is to help young guys like you.' A few steps ahead the young officer saw sentries saluting. Sam Maneckshaw told the officer, 'Don't be overwhelmed. They are saluting me. In my free time I also command the brigade.'

He is a world war 2 vetran soldier,sam manekshaw was hit by 33 bullets but he survived and became 1st field marshal of independent india .

The Pakistani man who put his turban on Sam’s foot was talking about his sons who were prisoners of war. They were telling how well they were being treated by Indian Army. ‘Langar’ is the community kitchen(they were appreciating that Sam himself tasted the food to ensure things were alright.)
