Considering they were seen as a bit frumpy back in the day, I think they've aged very well. I'd love a Montego now!

Biggest problem for all of BL/rover/mg products was that the reviewers loved to hate on them. Mg m cars are a riot to drive and easily as good as most of its competition - I’d say they drive better than an xr3i, but slated by the press

MG produced saloon cars (enclosed 4-seaters) before WW2 and continued after it. The Metro, Maestro, and Montego were a 1980s continuation of a long line of MGs. The 1927-29 14/40 was available as a 4-seater saloon. It's replacement, the 1928-31 18/80 was also available with that body type. The original Midget, the M-type of 1928-32 spawned a 4-seater saloon in the D-Type (1931-32). There were a number of Magnas and Magnettes in the early-1930s, complete with OHC straight-six engines, that carried saloon bodies on their chassis. In the late-30s Abingdon produced big, luxury saloon cars (VA,SA, WA). After the war you could get your hands on the YA saloon, which was replaced by the Magnette Z-Type cars (ZA, ZB), which were replaced by the Farina-bodied Magnettes (Morris Oxford, Austin Cambridge) from 1959-69. So the 1980s MGs were nothing new for MG.

Possibly just me but always thought there was something very elegant & beautiful about the proportions of the Montego headlights

had my montego for over 7 years (putting over 45,000 kms on it) and the only thing i've had to replace is a water pump, been an exceptional car

It might be fairer not to compare the MG Maestro and Montego to the MGB or Midget, but to the family cars with an MG badge that existed in the 1950s, 1960s and early 1970s, like the ADO16 MG 1100/1300 and the MG Magnette. People tend to remember only the sporty roadsters and coupés, but MG badge engineering didn't start in the 1980s.

I have a 2.0 Maestro EFI and I love to drive it. Takes me back to the 80ties, good vibes, no real regulations and lots of fun! <br>Lovely roar of the O Series Engine! Lots of fun with rock solid mechanic solutions. If anything goes wrong you just sort it yourself ❤🇬🇧👍

It's a shame you couldn't leave the industrial estate. I drove a Montego in 1984 and it was magnificent. Solid and smooth drive.

My parents had an MG Montego in silver, I used to have driving lessons in it! Memory unlocked.

Had a 1988 MG Maestro back in the day. The GTi lot always looked down on them.

I think that it was Autocar that took a bunch of contemporary hot hatches including the MG Maestro, to Castle Coombe circuit for testing. Much to everyone's surprise, although not the fastest in terms of acceleration, top speed etc, the MG Maestro turned out to the fastest around the track. So they definitely got the complete chassis package right.
