When Charlton went for his costume fitting at Bernham's for Gordon's gold braided jacket. He was very impressed and asked would it have really been so ornate? Their reply was yes Mr Heston, it was. He asked how do you know? They replied because we made the original and still have the pattern.

Saw it as a kid at the cinema with my parents. It looked great on the big screen especially to a seven year old! Play the DVD every so often and enjoy it every time.

Hello Chris, I'm a young Sudanese man researching his country's history. My great-grandfather died in the Battle of Omdurman on September 2, 1898, along with his cousins. My grandfather was 11 years old at the time, and my paternal grandmother was raised in the Mahdist family in Omdurman. I relied on local sources, narratives, and stories from family about the Mahdist movement and its role, and I was very proud of it, even though there were clear errors in several aspects. It remains a glorious revolution for me. What's even stranger, and perhaps new to you, is that there's a very sharp difference of opinion among us Sudanese ourselves. Some (not all) of the people of northern Sudan and the Nile Valley attribute the Mahdist movement to us, the people of western Sudan, specifically the tribes of Darfur and Kordofan. They see it as a bloody revolution that claimed many lives and was unjust. They believe that the current war, which began on April 15, 2023, involves the same tribes that supported the Mahdist movement and are now fighting within the Rapid Support Forces militia. They consider us the descendants of the Mahdist killers. It was the worst revolution and injustice, and so the attacks and abuse reached the point of cursing and other hateful things that I cannot mention. They completely deny that even they were not part of the Mahdiya and that their tribes and people are innocent of it. All of this is based on the book of Naoum Shoucair, as well as the book of the sword and fire by Slatin Pasha, or it is Al-Banqdiya and the sword, I am confused between translating the name. But luckily, during this search I found your beautiful channel and it opened for me new and interesting doors of knowledge and I enjoyed it and the very beautiful narration and literally when I listen to you I do not realize what is happening around me and I discovered that I have drunk 3 cups of coffee so far and I am going to count the fourth, so my greetings and thank you very much.

The Chinese portrait still hangs in the RE Officer’s Mess in the RE Depot in Chatham. The camel statue shown at the very end of the film was moved from Khartoum at independence and now faces the square.

I was able to drive past the compound where he died when I was on mission to Sudan in 2007. Unfortunately we weren’t able to enter.

Got to love the media = they called out to the government to send Gordon to Sudan and then cried out for the government to rescue Gordon

Zulu I find entertaining but when I discovered Khartoum it had a lot more of an emotional impact for me. I should give Khartoum a rewatch

I remember fondly reading WT Stead’s interview of Gordon many years ago … it was where I first learned of the horrors of the Bashi-Bazouk system.

I am a Sudanese doctor, but I am passionate about my country's history, especially the Mahdist Revolution. Your channel has played a significant role in rekindling my interest in this history. I have read many books about the Mahdist Revolution and the story of Gordon. Thanks for sharing.

A couple of years ago, I stumbled upon this channel thanks to a video that had "Saving General Gordon" on the thumbnail. What a great video, it was better than a movie! I've been subscribed ever since. Now, Victorian Era history is my reading preference, haha. Never would have discovered it on my own without The History Chap. I saw the movie right after and it became one of my favorite movies ever. Laurence Olivier as the Mahdi was unreal. Thanks for the great stories!
