I have to thank Steve Bailey for telling this great story. He cast a positive light on my dear friend and I do appreciate that.

Bad news, and good news. You didn't get the gig, but the guy they chose has the same last name! LOL! Jaco...

My Jaco story? Ok. I was playing drums with a group of ad hoc dudes somewhere in midtown Manhattan sometime in the late 80s. I was sitting at the kit playing and suddenly the door flew open. Not only did the door fly open but a chair that was holding the door shut went flying across the room. It was Jaco Pastorius who kicked that door open. He invited us to join his group in his rehearsal room and of course we all followed him. The place was in disarray with sheet music all over the floor. There were about four others in the room. The trumpet player put down his trumpet and started playing drums. Jaco sat at the piano, looked at the keys from the left to the right, and just starting pounding on them. The trumpet player stopped playing drums and shook his head. We all kind of drifted out of the room after that. I will never forget that experience like it happened yesterday.

My Jocko story is I was a temporary hired gun ('84) to fill in the bass slot for the JaxSmyth Band on Captiva Island Florida after the original bass player had to take a break but the days between me joining and him leaving they somehow manage to steal Jaco's Jazz Bass when he was doing a gig at Chadwick's South Seas Plantation Of course it was over some "chemical discrepancy" but he eventually got his Bass back and everything was happy ever after... TRUE STORY

Don Cohen is sorely missed. He was a character. Loaned me a bass amp for a tour- acoustic, of course.

Just an aside about adrenaline. I was playing bass in an original soul, funk rock group out of the eastbay. We were playing at a club on San Pablo Ave. when the front door opens and two people are coming in. It was so dark I couldn't see, but just by their siluet I knew that it was Stanley Clarke and George Duke! What?! They were recording their Clarke/ Duke Project album at Fantasy Records right down the street.(!)
That was a thrill. They told us that George and Stanley liked us! 👍 🎉 😂

I saw Jaco when he toured with Joni Mitchell. (!) Talk about a special performance 👏
Just incredible. ✨️ 🎶
The energy was so high. 🎆 🎇
I am so grateful 🙏 for that experience. ❤

Cheers! Jaco & Joni 🌹 (and band). 🕉 🎉
