No One Believed These Frank Zappa Stories… Until They Heard the Truth!

Frank Zappa grew up with gas masks in the hallway because his father worked at a U.S. Army chemical warfare facility that stored mustard gas. He played with liquid mercury on his bedroom floor — brought home by his dad in lab equipment. A doctor treated his childhood sinus infections by inserting radium pellets into his nostrils. He was constantly sick — asthma, earaches, infections that wouldn't clear. And then he became the most important American composer of the second half of the twentieth century. More than 60 albums. Over 30 years. Rock, jazz, classical, electronic, orchestral, doo-wop, comedy, musique concrète, film scores, and political satire — often on the same record. He never drank. He never used drugs. The wildest man in rock and roll was completely sober for his entire career. In this video, we tell the FULL Frank Zappa story — and it's stranger than anything he ever wrote. We cover: the chemical warfare childhood in Baltimore, the mercury and radium, his discovery of Edgard Varèse at 14, the phone call to the composer's home as a birthday present, the Mothers of Invention and Freak Out — one of the first concept albums in rock, We're Only in It for the Money — the anti-Sgt. Pepper, Hot Rats and the birth of fusion, the 1971 Rainbow Theatre attack where a fan pushed him 15 feet into a concrete pit — crushing his larynx, fracturing his skull, and leaving him in a wheelchair for a year, 60+ albums of genre-defying work produced from his home studio, the 1985 PMRC Senate hearing where he called censorship "treating dandruff by decapitation," the entirely instrumental album that received a Parental Advisory sticker anyway, Václav Havel appointing him cultural liaison for Czechoslovakia, considering a run for president, the prostate cancer diagnosis, The Yellow Shark premiere in a wheelchair, his final interview — "Everything is terminal" — and his death at 52, seventeen days before his birthday. This is the story of a man who grew up breathing poison and spent thirty years telling America the truth about itself. Completely sober. Every single day.
