The people mutilating rays for revenge of steve is the most disgusting thing I’ve ever heard. It’s such a foul antithesis to everything he stood for that I struggle to imagine the ven diagram of crocodile hunter lovers and people who would mutilate animals

The difference between Steve Irwin and others was that he did not make handling the animals look like a good idea. He emphasized the dangers, but at the same time, he destigmatized them. He explained how experts can safely relocate animals, which decreased the likelihood that people would go straight to killing them. Before that, people wouldn't even try to save crocs and alligators in bad areas. Now, relocation is common. People react very strongly to anyone NOT relocating them. That would not be the case without Steve Irwin. They would still be able to shoot these rare creatures as a first resort without anyone blinking an eye.
I'm very grateful to Steve Irwin every time I see an article about a crocodile or alligator in a weird location that ends with it being relocated.

I think the majority of Australians agree that Steve Irwin should be on our currency instead of King Charles

The sting rays being killed reminded me of a show of people who survived animal attacks, one was a boy who survived a stingray stab. He was watching the water at the pier with his family and a fishman saw him and his brother and showed them the stingray he caught. The fisherman planned to throw it but another fishman said they should remove the stinger so it doesnt kill anyone like Steve. The stinger was then basically shot into the kid as the fisher pulled it out, hitting him in the stomach. The kid survived as it hit him in the stomach but the kid had got an infection from the stinger, which both caused him to be hospital for a while. The kid begged people to just leave animals alone and thinks the fisher was dumb thinking taking the stinger would help anyone.

Terry has done a beautiful job keeping his memory and legacy alive. Saying right after his death that his life was so much more than that last moment, she directed the tragedy into a beautiful memory. ❤

His incredible empathy left such a huge impact on me. I remember the way he talked about the 'scary' animals, saying that they were just doing their job in the ecosystem, and that the things that made them scary were just adaptations the same way that traits we think of as 'cute' are- basically, that all kinds of animals are equally deserving of our respect. I loved that about him.

This one might make me cry. I grew up watching his shows when they were being made. I remember watching the Diaries episode where his daughter was born, and thinking how lucky she was. I still remember where I was when I heard he was dead. When I was studying/working in animal care and medicine, literally every other person I met was inspired to work with animals in part by this man right here. A whole generation of animal lovers were raised watching him.

When I was in the 5th grade, like, in 2000-2001, I vividly remember having Steve Irwin themed Valentines to give out to my classmates, and it was awesome.

I remember when he died and we found out at school. ALL the teachers and students were in tears and we held an assembly and got the day off. He was extremely well respected even in tiny Welsh schools.
