It’s an old game but to introduce a beginner game is…Tactics ll by Avalon hill

I think Axis and Allies should definitely be considered. Yes it sacrifices reality for playability, but for a beginner, you don't want them bogged down by intricate rules. It's relatively easy and fun, and captures some of the essence of wargaming. If a person enjoys A&A, taking the next step up to something more complicated will be easier. If they don't enjoy it, chances are they're not going to be into some of the games you've mentioned. I even think Risk is a good beginner "wargame" that might entice someone to to the next steps into some of the games you've mentioned.

Outstanding coverage of intro games. Loved that you included possible games for a future list that you haven't played yet. Really helpful video. I'm a wargamer since the 1960s.

I can definitely second Downfall of Empires , Gettysgurg: A Time for Heroes , and 1944: Battle of the Bulge . There are others in the list that I'm sure belong there, altho I haven't gotten to play them next.

My one complaint -- and I realize that I'm probably in the minority -- is the number of solitaire games on your list. I almost never play solitaire and only own a couple solitaire-only games. I value the social aspect of gaming. Also, if we're trying to recruit new gamers, I would think that part of the motivation is to have more people to play with. Besides, if I want to play solo, I'd rather play a pc game than a solo board game, and let the pc do the work of running my opponent.

My go-to game to introduce new gamers is still Avalon Hill's Gettysburg (1988). It's easy, fun to play, not rule-heavy, and the components look great, even after 30+ years. I bought my copy at the PX when I was in the Marines, and I still own it

War at Sea was one of the first war games I ever bought, probably around 1976 or 1977. A very good introductory to naval area war gaming.

MEMOIR'44 - ONLY one of these 20 that I've played ( I've also played a lot of the Command & Colors games - I'm older player of wargames from the 1960's AH boardgames) - I'd also suggest A HOUSE DIVIDED by GDW (Amer. Civil War) simple, fun ! :-)

Try Road to Independence as an intro game. Very fun light game on the American Revolution by The Historical Game Company. Also, while you’re waiting for Kaiser’s High Seas Fleet, try Victory at Sea by Compass. It’s their reprint of the 1992 version of Victory at Sea which was an update of the old War at Sea by AH. Also easy to play, visually appealing and fun.
