From 79 to 83, I worked at a tourist railroad that had a 12-ton Plymouth 4-wheeled locomotive with a D8 engine.  It had a 2-cylinder gas pony motor with a  2-speed transmission to start the diesel engine.  The pony motor had a self-starter and a crank for starting.  I personally liked the crank for starting.  The exhaust from the pony went through the intake manifold of the diesel to warm the intake air to start the diesel.  In cold weather, the pony was started and run for a time before trying to start the diesel.  At first, the low speed of the pony transmission was used to turn the diesel with the compression release on just to warm the diesel.  Then the high speed of the transmission was used to spin the diesel and slowly let off the compression release to engage the diesel to fire.  It was the easiest diesel to start in the Michigan winter we had, and usually without ether.  The top RPM of the diesel was 1000.

If I was guessing I would say that's your Grandson, I'm glad to see young people taking interest in learning how things work and how to fix them.

A friend of mine was in heavy equipment mechanics school, when a miner brought in one of those Cats. Hadn't run in a couple of years, but the engine and tranny were still good. He was tasked with removing and rebuilding the swingarms, clutch packs, and the clutches, cables, and associated blocks for the blade. I remember clearly him spreading the parts books on my kitchen table where I helped him maked a long list of parts, including new tracks. The parts were there in three weeks just as he finished disassembling the main parts of that rig. I still to this day find it amazing that you can rebuild a 1940's Cat from the parts manuals.

Nobody understands what&apos;s it&apos;s like to be an old buck in charge of a super powerful piece of machinery, (like a freaking war tank), and having a crew of young men with zero knowledge of what that thing can do to a human body, if just one of those controls is in the wrong place at start up, let alone that truck or barn in the way of that moving, well, &quot;unstoppable force.&quot;<br>Props to willey!
