I moved to Seoul in Spring of 2024 after getting married to my Korean husband. I'm a doctor but because it's virtually impossible to work here as an international graduate, I've been preparing for the USMLE on my own. I relate a lot to what you said about forgetting that most people's days are in offices with other people as opposed to me who have to spend hours studying by myself. I'm very grateful for the opportunity to even focus on studying. I'm thankful for my husband's sacrifices. And thankful for my church community (I'm an Eastern Orthodox christian) who took me in wholeheartedly and have been a huge source of peace and joy.

as an office worker based in seoul, yes I do get to interact w/ ppl in the office every day but I feel like I keep looking for communities (which is NOT easy I have to say!) with that being said, would love it if you could host an offline one-day book club here 💖

So many of your thoughts on freelance/WFH life and needing to know there's an "out" resonated right now. I am totally in that era where working for myself has lost the shine and excitement it had when I was first beginning. Now I feel reality has set in a bit more (and the world has just grown rougher) and I'm full of doubt that I can actually turn what I'm doing into a stable living. I definitely have had to sit down with myself lately and think about what an alternative life could look like where I'm not doing my creative work full time. It's both really scary but also sort of a relief to imagine there's an "escape door" and other possibilities for me. Lovely video from you as always and I always appreciate your thoughts! Many many congrats on your debut translation!! 🥳

I'm reading Ulysses right now, and it's really not that bad. You just have to go in understanding that a lot of it purposefully doesn't make sense, so you just have to let the words flow and not overthink it.

love light in august. My first Faulkner as well, honestly might be my absolute favorite of his.

I agree that academia can be isolating. I also feel that the people I can talk math with are not necessarily the same as the people I like to hang out with. I have found it hard to meet people out of my program, but I have made the effort to attend social events at the university outside of my department. It is partially the reason I picked up reading again as well as trying to attend events at my local library. One thing that I have not yet gotten to get myself to do alone is go watch a movie lol. Anyways, aging is also a weird thing and meeting people in the same stage of life as mine has been challenging, but I will keep trying to put myself out there!

    I really love your videos.
I would say I am also going through a quarter-life crisis. It is tough because I feel clueless about my future and all choices seem to yield more risk than benefit. One could only ask for a calm mind and a courageous heart at those times.

12:12 i definetly have been going through this… for a great while now 😅 after highschool i went for a college course just for the sake of it cause i never knew what i wanted to do. i ended up sticking to it, but in it’s last semesters i was struggling for i couldn’t fully see myself having this job. somehow, a few weeks ago a freelance~remote~ typa job found >me< and i’m rush-studying to start practing it, and i feel like this opened doors in my mind and heart – i even feel capable of working in my graduation field later on. in the end it really is having open doors for some of us!

Here in Tokyo there are these monthly meetups held by different groups (I know of one run by a bookstore and another that was started by an individual) where people can get together in parks and cafes and just read in company for half the time and then chat the other half. It's low pressure and the vibes are great (readers make lovely company!). Pretty much all of the attendees are English speaking, whether if they're native Japanese or foreign born. If there's something like that in Seoul that could be a great opportunity to find community, and if it doesn't exist I'm sure if you started it, like minded people will come.

RE: finding community when you work from home/live alone. the things that have helped me have been local organizing like getting involved with a pro-housing group in my neighborhood, becoming a regular at my local library and favorite coffee shop and spending a few hours each week chilling there, having recurring standing plans with people like doing trivia every week or co-working at the same spot once a week, and being brave and saying hi to familiar faces😊
