Fun fact! Most telivisions made before the 60s had an extra plastic layer on top of the CRT to protect the individual in the very rare case that it implodes. However, this problem was very quickly fixed by making the glass layer on the CRT thicker, the reason why they are very heavy.

Not only is it the leaded glass, but CRT TVs have a safety shutdown that triggers if the flyback voltage is too high.  Repair manuals warn to not substitute parts in safety critical circuits to maintain the X-ray protection.

In addition to the tv deadly problems listed here, there was another serious flaw of one specific brand, known primarily to Europeans. In the 70s and 80s, Russian Tv's called Rubin could catch fire and even explode due to overheating and faulty wiring. In Poland, we called Rubin-714 "the bomb TV" or "Stalin's revenge"

There was a large CRT TV on the side of the road on junk day. I threw a rock into the screen. The implosion blew out the back of the TV. Glass covered the grass for about 20 feet. It also shot glass forward about 5 feet.
