It should be noted that when Seren killed Mah was more of a mercy killing. She had been suffering for a long, long time. Even more after what Zaros was doing, so she, much to her own pain, put Mah out of her misery

I do think having the gods return as characters is something I don't want for oldschool but I like the mystery that Zaro exists but not physically in a sense.

15:30 this is why I grew closer to Azzanadra than Zaros himself. The revealation in Azzanadra's quest where Zaros refused your allegiance no matter how much Azzanadra protested, forcing you to be enemies was heartbreaking.

I may throw my hat in with Zaros, but to me, the fact he is an absent deity is why he’s so interesting, and bringing him to the forefront or, god forbid, bringing him back into the realm of mortals, would undermine everything built up. RS3 fumbled hard by introducing the gods as someone you can interact with directly, and the fact that the gods in the recent updates have left the world again is their acknowledgement of this

The reason why the gods are interesting isn’t because they’re powerful, it’s that they hold sway and influence without being present in the first place, and Zaros himself being beyond that by even being missing among the gods who are there but always out of reach, adds to things. He’s an overlooming threat, because it took the staff of armadyl exchanging hands with Saradominists to not only ascend Zamorak and dethrone Zaros, but Zamorak couldn’t truly finish off Zaros, and that gives Zamorak something to fear

The most I can see Zaros “appearing” is when Lucien is defeated, he tries to call to Zaros for aid since Lucien is betraying Zamorak, but upon using his power to reach out, he is shown trying to speak to a god who does not answer and does not even acknowledge him, his back turned and then he fades into the emptiness as per his namesake

The Mahjarrat and Return of Zaros questlines are essentially the games "main story", as quite a few other quests and quest series tie into it and Zaros and the Mahjarrat underpin tons of otherwise unrelated lore, bringing everything all back to them. It fits for Zaros being the god of fate and control, pulling the strings of destiny on the lives of everyone and everything else, like a spiders web that leads back to him.

Zaros should, however, stay gone. The most I would be okay with in oldschool is seeing him speak for a few lines with a chathead in a psychic communication kind of thing at the end of Ritual of the Mahjarrat, and that's that.

Zaros being missing and the mystery behind him is what makes him interesting, in a very similar vein to Lorkhan from the Elder Scrolls. A missing god, a lost deity, wandering eternally after some kind of banishment, but still so powerful he can still influence the world, and even the other gods fearing him makes the mystery that much more intriguing. How terrible could Zaros be that other deities would fear just his name and influence to the point of wanting to stamp it out? All a very fun and engaging mystery.

    15:20

I think one of Runescape's strengths is having character's move according to who they are. Seren and Zaros's fall from grace have been spectacular to follow throughout the years as once you understood their origin, it really makes sense how they ended up where they currently are.

The gods, more so than any other character in Runescape, are heavily defined by their actions than any of their words. And in Old School, you can see the aftermath of their actions, but will not see any present day action. Instead, you "hear their words" through their followers and get a different picture of who they are. As Icthlarin once said, "godhood only amplifies what you were before ascension".

At the end of the God storyline, I think it's fitting that most gods, through their actions, ended up repeating history, despite all their colorful words to the player.

Amazing video! I loved it from begginign to end, keen to watch more!

Always nice to find a fellow old-time Zaros fan. I so fondly remember as a kid never giving too much attention to the story in the game's quests (partly because I wasnt perfectly fluent in english back then) until one day I randomly happened to stumble upon the Curse of the Empty Lord miniquest by sheer chance, I was instantly hooked and fascinated, and learning waht felt like ancient forbidden lost knowledge was incrdible (Zamorak was mortal once! and became a god!!), it forever changed my engagement with the stories and world of Runescape and as time went on cemented Zaros as my favourite god.

One interesting aspect of Zaros both as a god and as a character to me is something you loosely touched in the video, though didnt into much detail. I always found one of the coolest aspects of Zaros' whole character is the fact that for all his drive for power and control, his pragmatism and supposed emotionless demeanor, he displays a very consistent trait of avoidance to his whole persona (though he wouldnt describe it or necessarily be aware of it), is and always was an absentee leader and god... part of Zamorak's frustration and eventual motivation to turn on Zaros was his apparent neglect of the empire, he was often times never there leaving others to run it for him, obviously we can attribute this to constant pursuit of more, but there's an interesting argument to be said about what this says of the pursuit of perfection, something unattainable even to the gods, Zaros would always show up to a place, establish himself as the superior force at the top of the pyramid, even help them and civilize them, only to then leave behind broken unfinished products, like he'd get bored or unsatisfied of things when they could never achieve his perfect vision (he took his spot at the top of Demon society, but maintained the cthonians at the top of the foodchain regardless of the treatment of the lesser species of demon, which created an opening for Zamorak to recruit them to their cause; he introduced civilization to the Vampires, only to then leave them to their own devices for ages causing one of the clan leaders to slaughter the leaders of all others and take over vampire society as its sole ruler, only to return to them when he wanted an army for his new "Project" in a new realm).

All this is extra cool when juxtaposed with his sister Seren, the absentee-deattached leader vs the overprotective-obsessed leader (someone who, rather than abandon her subjects to their own devises, made them wholly dependant on her to exist, they could not leave their side)
