  Back in the 50s a neighbor removed several very large (at least 4 ft) oak stumps with no real effort. He would start a small fire at the base, then hook up an old Electrolux vacuum and set the discharge hose at the fire creating a forge type fire. Then he would sit back in a chaise lounge with a beer and watch. It didn&apos;t happen overnight, but they&apos;re gone??

  Used to be a logger. Cutting a new road up the hill and had to remove some stumps. One was really tough. The foreman was getting anxious to finish it and ordered our dynamite guy to put a ridiculous amount of TNT to blow it out. It worked. The stump flew high in the air and landed on the foremans truck. Insurance denied his claim.

  My wife&apos;s father gave us an acre of &quot;unimproved&quot; land here in West Virginia to put a house on and move into in 2001. I talked to 5 heavy equipment operators who each gave me $2,000 to $2,500 estimates and several days to clear stumps, (father in law heated with wood and had cut a lot of trees), from half an acre as the other half acre was at a 45 degree down hill run and mostly power line easement. I talked to the 6th operator who brought his bulldozer up and charged me $50.00 an hour. He had the land cleared, flatened and preped for our doublewide in 9 hours over 2 days for $450.00. <br> <br>His cousin came up with his backhoe / loader, towed by his dumptruck, after the house was set and, for $124 a load including the rock, brought two large dumptruck loads of gravel and a load of choke, (fine rock dust that sets like concrete with rain and time), and spread it to cover our 80&apos; X 60&apos; driveway / parking area / garage floor before it ws built. <br>For another $1,000, he: <br>Installed a 1,000 gallon concrete septic tank. <br>Hand dug with a shovel, through a large patch of trees, the trench for the 4 inch septic line 140 feet down the hill. <br>Installed the 4 inch PVC line. <br>Backhoed 165 feet of trench. <br>Installed 165 feet of 18 inch gravel-less pipe for the septic leech field. <br>Dug the 80 foot X 18 inch deep trench with his backhoe so that I could lay my water line, (It would have cost more to hire a ditch witch at 80c a foot). A Ditch Which would have cost $68.00 with tax. He did it in 20 minutes at $40.00 an hour or about $13 and change. <br>Then filled it in when I was finished. Another 10 minutes at $6.50. <br>Everything but the water line was included. I bought that at 29c a foot for 100 feet of black coiled plastic or $29.00 + tax. <br>My advice is, DO NOT take the first estimate you get and ALWAYS ask around as to the quality of a prospect&apos;s work. <br>The dozer operator was hard to get as he was backloged. Most of the, then, operating coal mines in a 5 county area were outbidding each other for his services. He was nice enough to come on a weekend and knock ours out in 5 hours one day and 4 the next. <br>$1,450.00 got us a SHlTLOAD of work and merch done and we haven&apos;t had a problem with ANY of it in 25 years. A monthly dose of RidX in the toilet and we haven&apos;t even needed the septic pumped once yet. Not so much because of them as their work was done correctly the first time with no kinks, corners or blockages. <br>Worked for us.

  I’ve been told by the Interweb that the chips from a stump grinder should be completely removed because they suck the nitrogen out of the soil as they decompose. That’s why it’s hard to get grass to grow over a ground stump.
