Mama Cass, the lady saying "wow" at the end was part of the (at the time) super group, The Mamas & The Papas. The Monterey Pop Festival was one of the first big outdoor Rock Concerts. Check out Eric Burdon & The Animals' hit "Monterey" in which he names the big acts who played that day.

she had a lot of pain in her life. It came through in her singing.

There's something about a candle that burns twice as bright for half as long. RIP Janis.

At the time of this concert Janis was still for the most part undiscovered. Sad thing is she died not knowing how loved and how deep of an impact she had on music even today.

Goosebumps EVERY time I see this performance.   She felt this in every part of her being.

This lady could sing! Sadly we lost her too soon. She was only 27 when she died. Had a lot of great songs such as "Piece Of My Heart", "Cry Baby", "Down On Me", "Ball & Chain", "Summertime" & her original song "Mercedes Benz". If you want to see a bit softer side, check out "Me & Bobby McGee".

Best female vocalist to ever grace this planet.   They walked on that stage that night as nobody’s and walked off stars.  Especially Janis.

Clive Davis was in the audience.  He signed Janis to her first record deal after this performance.  This was the  1967 Monterrey Pop Festival.

Janis was in a class by herself. None before her or after. Her hero was blues legend Bessie Smith.

You've got to understand NOBODY had heard Janis before the Monterey Pop Festival...the one you're watching.  She blew the roof off the place (well it was actually outside, but you get it).  Cass Elliot was the woman they kept showing.  Cass was one of the Mamas and the Papas band.  THEY were responsible for this, the first rock festival.  They called in a lot of favors to make it happen.  Imagine how it must have been for Janis.  She was frightened little girl when she walk on stage, she left a famous woman.  I saw Janis often, living in the Bay Area.

I read somewhere that we almost didn’t get this performance recorded! It was Janis that insisted and thankfully we have it for all to enjoy. RIP Janis
