I saw a comment on a Not Just Bikes video about how dealerships don't sells cars any more, they sell car loans. . . And I'll be thinking that forever.

The biggest problem here is that American car manufacturing is so out of touch with the worldwide market that they need to be protected by import bans, but this will make it so that they become exclusively dependent on the American market. As soon as those protections are gone so are American car manufacturers.

Needing a subscription to use the stuff your car already comes with. And adding a kill switch to cars is wild

I looked up the cost to replace my 14 year old subcompact car with identical year and model. $12,000 dollars! It was $4,000 before COVID. The used car market is absolutely beyond comprehension at this point.

My grandma is 79 and I'm 26. She said she always keeps newer cars because she doesn't want to be broken down on the side of the road as a single woman and encourages me to get rid of my 2001 Ford Taurus SES and upgrade to something "better". As far as I know, new car does not = never breaks down. In fact, it breaks down more. I bought my car outright 7 years ago, it doesn't have spyware or needs updates, and easy to work on in the garage because all the hood components are within arms reach. Parts are also cheap and some things are so easy I can do them myself. I've have the lightbulbs, starter, battery, and alternator replaced on it so far and it's been as easy as calling a buddy up, saying hey i need help can you come over, and him rolling up with a toolbox and I'm + 1 alternator - 1 steak dinner. That's how I like my cars lol

If I could functionally live in my city car free, I would. Urban sprawl + lack of public transport is literal hell.

My vehicles are paid off, but even seeing some of the new "tech" that is being added makes me refuse to get a new vehicle. ie. Interior cameras that scan your face and decide for you whether or not you can start your car.

I'm extremely fortunate that my current car is the car I inherited that my parents bought for my sister and I to use for school. It's completely paid off and still has plenty of life left on it. I'm taking that absolute best care of it that I can to maximize its life and put off buying a new vehicle.

That investment in domestic public transportation is how the Chinese government got their EV business kick-started in the first place. Ten years ago China made cheap copies of western cars and that was about it. The government poured billions of dollars into electricfying their public bus fleets, which were massive. Tens of thousands of busses across hundreds of big cities. This was a big enough market to pay for the R&D needed to build a car factory that could churn out tesla-level EVs at huge scale. And that's exactly what happened. All the technology and facilities that let BYD build any category of car for half the price of any other country, were created by investing MASSIVELY in local public transport systems ten to fifteen years ago.
