When I was a young nurse I worked on Hanover avenue, home of the Allentown state hospital aka the nut house. It was also the home of a big dumpy housing project, Hanover acres, and a rundown slaughterhouse. It must have been named for the kings of Hanover. We moved out of the trailer park and bought a house with the money I made there. I must have needed the down payment really bad.

I am out here in Buttpoke, Pennsylvania near Lake Erie. Some folks out here still hate the British from the war of 1812.

King James" idea of hygiene was the standard of the day. Remember surgeons did not wash their gloveless hands between surgeries during the US civil war centuries later. The idea of daily, weekly, monthly, yearly or decade baths was a hard sell. Many women died of child bed fever because doctors if they had one instead of a midwife did not wash their hands.

I’m about halfway through this, but I don’t believe the problem with most of these rulers is stupidity so much as it is mental illness. George III, for example, passed from periods of lucidity to periods of delusion, at first brief, but by his later years, his eldest son had to become regent. As for the term “Farmer George” — that was a term of affection from his subjects, which he enjoyed.

Henry VI had a maternal grandfather (who happened to be the King of France) who also suffered from mental illness— at times believing he was made of glass, and was terrified of falling lest he shatter. In a system where royals married royals, the result is frequently inbreeding, with bad genetic results.

As for Anne, given that she had seventeen pregnancies, none of which survived to adulthood, it is no wonder she sought comfort in food, and was struggling with grief (and probably post-partum depression).

A person can be quite bright and still suffer from mental illness. If there is stupidity here, it’s in sticking with an inherited monarchy as a system of government, when some of those who got the job were just not good at it, and others never wanted the job in the first place. It’s not exactly a good system for producing the ableist people for the job, though no system is perfect.

I happen to agree with what Winston Churchill, “Democracy is the worst form of government, except for all the others that have been tried”. And hopefully, we can create a system with checks and balances, so no one individual can obtain total, unchecked power (do you hear me, orange man? —And I’m not talking about William of Orange). In fact, based on what I’ve seen so far, I’d have to conclude that Trump is probably more stupid, and willfully ignorant, than most of these monarchs. He’s cunning as a con artist, as he has proven, but has little real wisdom or the ability to learn from his many mistakes.

He’s cunning is testing our system as it has never been tested before, and unfortunately, the other two branches and the press are not doing their job of checking his grabs at power, or reporting it accurately. And I remember Nixon!
