Some pronunciation notes:-<br>Menzies: in my experience, not pronounced 'Ming-Gus' - the 'g' is silent - 'Ming-iss' is more accurate [however sometimes popularly pronounced as spelled i.e., with the 'z' thanks to the name 'John Menzies,' a former booksellers/newsagents chain of shops in Scotland]. <br>Buchan: not 'Boo-' but Buh-.'<br>Dumfriesshire: not 'Dumfreys-' but 'Dumfreese-'<br>Turnberry; not 'Turn Berry' - it's one word, not two (splitting long names into two parts appears to be an American approach)

descended from an orkney Bruce. Apparently the King sent some Bruce's to the Orkneys to claim the land for Scotland, The first Bruce to arrive on Turtle island worked for the Northwest Fur trading company in what is now Saskatchewan,

The earliest record of a Somerville in Scotland is 1124 in scone. William de Somerville my ancestor witnessed Bruce awarded land by David I before he himself was given land.<br><br>The name comes from ‘Sommervieu’ just North East of Bayeux owing knights fees to Bishop Odo much like the De Lacy family did. <br><br>We later see Robert de Somerville in seacroft in West Yorkshire holding under De Lacy<br><br>Somerville’s that stayed in Normandy founded ‘Sémerville’ in Évreux that laste become ‘Graveron-Sémerville’ after a marriage and merging of holdings.

Mildly interesting, although there is one point to be made, the Normans never invaded Scotland, some were invited by King David as he wanted their castle building skills and the local indigenous people were not using surnames at that time in history, they simply took the name of the local chief or lord. The norman knights that came north from England were in single numbers, I am from Scotland and my own name is Sinclair which came from the Norman St Clair. My DNA is 94% Scottish, mostly from the north east and central highlands, Pictland, this is the same for most people in Scotland.... not Norman, not Viking not Anglo Saxon but Pictish. Everything north of the rivers Clyde and forth was Pictland. So the Norman blood is not present in most Scots.....
