Is Derek Trucks REALLY Better than Duane Allman?

Great video, but I want to take a second and give a recommendation for Dylan's slide courses. I bought both a few months back and as of now have finished the first one, and am up to the first solo lesson in the fretting behind the slide course. I've learned so much in such a short time. Now I went through two years of music school so I already had a lot of the theory and shapes drilled into me, but Dylan's style of teaching, and his ability to explain right hand concepts (which for me was the hardest thing to get down) was one of the most helpful experiences I've had on my guitar journey. I always hated re-tuning my guitar so I never thought to bother with slide, but now I'm reaching a point where even after a few months, I've been using it in the studio and on records for some of my local clients, to great success. Still need more time to play it live, but my EXPRESSION alone on the guitar has become more soulful just by opening my mind up to a different way to approach standard tuning.

To Dylan, you might not see it now, but I see a future where people will start to throw you into this conversation as well. I hope to jam with you one day. Cheers.

I'm 74 yrs old now, I was there when the first album came out . It was a real game changer. Listen to the 1968 bootleg album " Duane and Gregg " or his slide resonator on Cowboy's " Please be With Me " That was just a God given gift , I really felt like I knew him. Still do 55 yrs on now. No amt. of practice or music theory could ever make that happen. He will always be # 1 for me. RIP my brother Duane.

I'm glad you mentioned Duane's fretted playing -- "Loan Me a Dime" is a master's class on developing/expanding themes within a solo. He tells a few stories on that track.

Duane opened the door for Derek to walk-through. That being said, Derek sprinted through that door as a young kid and is still running. It’s all subjective. I saw Derek a few weeks ago in Macon and I feel he’s playing is better than ever with the maturity that I never saw coming. He continues to blow my mind and when I put on. Atlanta pop festival. Duane continues to blow my mind. Can you just imagine if Duane had YouTube? Keep up the good work you’re killing it. I’m gonna start your course the beginning of the year. Hope to see you soon.

I agree with your points, but when I play slide my target is Duane!

Duane died in his twenties. He sort of invented slide in rock music and was headed in a jazzy direction. The Allman brothers with Duane lasted, what, four/five years.

Derek in my opinion, sort of represents what Duane would have become had he lived longer.

Hey Dylan, Nice to meet you here. What a great comprehensive job you did on this video of analyzing and appreciating both Duane & Derek, and thanks also for mentioning Dickey as well. Let's not forget the great Warren Haynes and The Tolerations Brothers, who also helped support The Band's efforts over the years. In my opinion, you couldn't have done a better job discussing the qualities and nuances between both men. Living here in Nashville, where both Duane and Gregg were born, are you aware of another phenomenal player by the name of Phil Keaggy? He got his start with his band from Youngstown, OH, a few years after The Allmans began their careers in 1968. Phil's band is still "Glass Here" which he performs with a few times each year. Phil of course, is a dynamite solo player and was also in the list of the 100 best players of the 20th Century by Guitar Player Magazine. He lives in The Bellevue Community just south of Nashville, and I encourage you check out his videos as well. I first attended one of Phil's concerts back in 1974, and he's been a friend for many years. I don't know if he ever mastered any slide playing or not, but he may have. He's equally adept at playing classical styles and certainly the entire "Rock Watefront" but he's not really a Blues Player. Like James Taylor, Phil plays a custom Olsen electrified Acoustic, and during his live shows he masterfully uses Jam Man Boxes to lay down several loops to which he then accompanies himself. His singing voice is reminiscent of Paul MacCartney's so that's an interesting tidbit as well. I hope you'll check him out. The "Urban Legend" which isn't factually true, was that for many years after Jimi had received a Grammy for his work on "Purple Haze" is that when he was a guest on The Tonight Show hosted by Johnny Carson, when Carson asked him how he felt to be the world's greatest rock guitarist, his mythological response (which Phil says ins't true) was that he responded by saying, "I don't know, go ask Phil Keaggy!" I don't think that the two of them ever met. Phil is now 74, only 6 months older than I am. When I was at his home studio a few years ago, while walking upstairs to the kitchen, on the wall I noticed a poster that showed that Glass Harp had performed at the Fillmore East in NYC. Thanks again much-ly, Ted Schempp, Nashville. TedSchempp.com.
