Are you like me and keep using your "crappy stuff" in order to preserve the "good stuff" which is kept boxed up and unused? Do yourself a favor and get rid of the crappy stuff and use the best stuff you have. What is going to happen is you will grow old and pass away and your kids will find all the good stuff you never got to enjoy still boxed up. And they will probably just donate it away!

I like what "The Minimalists" say. "Love people, use things. Because the opposite never works."

I don’t care what happens to my stuff after Im gone, but the things I keep, I keep for myself during this lifetime.

One harsh truth that many people don’t want to accept is that there is too much stuff being made and purchased every day in the world for it all to be saved. There are not enough thrift shops in the world to resell all the stuff that goes out the door of Walmart, Amazon and Target every day. Until we quit consuming more than we need, the world will continue to drown in consumer goods, and reselling and donating isn’t the answer. A lot of people think it is.

One harsh truth I’ve learned is that none of my adult kids want my ‘stuff’ and that’s ok. It has made it a whole lot easier for me to let go of so much.

I was a "one day I'll need this" hoarder. I wish I had saved the magazine article I read about decluttering, where the first thing the author wrote was "Forgive yourself. You spent money on these things with good intentions, and now you're regretting it and beating yourself up about all the money and time you spent on this stuff. Forgive yourself." That was cathartic for me. EDITED TO ADD A BIG THANK YOU for all the likes! Those two little words "Forgive yourself" took such a load off my mind. I'm glad it helped others, too.

My 27 year old son DOES want my stuff. Not everything but he does appreciate vintage & antique furniture, high end cookware, antique glassware, etc.

We lost both our parents this past year. I kept reminding myself and my sibling that this stuff ISN’T Mom or Dad. Getting rid of the stuff wasn’t getting rid of them.

I quickly found out what I really value when my house was burglarized. I was hysterical until I located my cats hiding in the house. I was so scared they were taken or harmed in some way I didn't even think about what had been stolen. Occasionally I'll think, "oh yeah, that necklace was stolen" but I have no emotion about it.

When I started decluttering and trying to downsize my things, I attempted to sell it on Facebook Marketplace to make some extra cash. I decided very quickly between the people messaging me for no reason, people that stood me up, and the scammers it simply was not worth the frustration and anxiety it spiked in me. In the end I just donated my things. They were out of my house and hopefully into another loving home.
