It's funny, people know that Groundhog Day means living the day over again, but reactors always fail to realize that this movie is why that association exists. It's modern folklore.

Since this came out in 1993, Groundhog Day became synonymous with a timeloop.

Time loops are not new to movies and TV, but after this movie came out, "Groundhog Day" became a meme to describe a situation that keeps repeating.

"Gobbler" is a different name for a turkey. A "knob" is a small hill. Gobbler's Knob is a small hill where turkeys can be found. Of course the double entendre remains intact ;)

In the scene where he's being told the old man has died, the kid who falls from the tree can be seen in the background with a cast on his leg.

FYI: The doctor is Harold Ramis, the Director/Writer of the film. RIP Harold.

Director Harold Ramis estimated that Phil was in his loop for between 30 and 40 years.

The tradition is actually rooted in European weather lore and the Christian holiday of Candlemas. The general idea is based on a reversal of expectations. If the sun is out and the groundhog sees its shadow, it supposedly means "winter" will persist. This stems from the old belief that if Candlemas Day is bright and clear, the second half of winter will be cold and stormy. If it’s cloudy, it signals that the "winter" weather has exhausted itself, and an early spring is on the way.

The "six more weeks" part is a bit of a cheeky trick of the calendar. Whether the groundhog sees its shadow or not, six weeks from February 2nd is almost exactly the Spring Equinox (usually March 20th or 21st). Essentially, the groundhog is predicting that winter will last... until winter is officially over anyway.

The tradition traveled to Pennsylvania with German immigrants. In Europe, they originally watched badgers or bears for the same signs. Since badgers were hard to find in Pennsylvania, the early settlers recruited the groundhog (or "woodchuck") for the job.
