  It was said that, before the movie, Punxetauney experienced an influx of about 2000 people every year for Groundhog Day, but after the movie, it jumped to 20,000 people every year.

  I think that what broke the loop was how he felt about himself. Early on he says “I don’t even like myself” I think that was the reason for the loop to begin with. On the last day he says “no matter what happens tomorrow, I’m happy now” I think once he became a man he could be proud of being without the promise for reward it broke the loop. I also loved the concept of the old man being a reality check for him. He mused that he was a god then read the passage that “only god can make a tree” when he discovers the old man had died he says “not today” but then no matter how hard he tries he can’t save him which reminds him that no matter how much control he had over the loop he was not and could not stop death. He is humbled again and again by this but is a far better person in the end. Such a great story

  Groundhog Day is what is called a &quot;reference script&quot; in that it is one of the classics aspiring screenwriters are encouraged to study.

  When the old man dies the first time in the hospital, the boy who falls out of the tree is in the background in a wheelchair with a cast on.

  It’s a minor miracle you’ve never heard of the premise of Groundhog’s Day. This is absolutely my favorite comedy.

  When you really think about it... Phil goes thru the 5 stages of grief during his long, long, long time in the loop. Denial, anger, bargaining (doing things selfishly) , depression (giving up, trying to off himself), and finally acceptance (slowly becoming a better man just because). A true classic... Bill Murray humor + existential themes!

  A movie can be more than one genre and Groundhog Day is a comedy. It has more than enough laughs to make it one.
