My family owned a farm. Originally we had multiple cows, then my rod went to work for the government. We went to 1 cow, “Fanny” , for milk, bred to sell or butcher the calf, 1 pig, chickens for meat and eggs. I remember homemade cottage cheese, homemade ice cream, then because my dad got promoted several times in different locations, we sold the animals, kept the farm, it was our “vacation spot” til my parents passed away and my brother bought the farm. I miss those days on the farm. I have my own acreage 550 miles away now I’d like to have one or two of these smaller cows. My dream as a 7-year-old was to be able to milk a cow as fast as my mother did. Still is.

So many commenters apparently never heard of the family cow. Most families had a single cow. The family cow was a happy, healthy lawn mower. The herd mentality is a manufactured "reason" to prevent a large number of people abandoning the dairy industry.

My wife wants a milk cow terribly. I kept milk cows in my teens and she doesn't realize how much you are tied to that cow. Twice a day wether you feel like it or not.

This is cool, I didn’t know the Dexter came from Ireland. I knew the Highland cow came from Scotland and possibly the Belted Galloway as well.

Been following Dexter info for a while. Years ago had white faced cows and a borrowed Sentia bull. Now Now am going to try the Dexter breed

Pete Larson's"Just a Few Acres" YouTube channel has Dexters as the cow part of his homestead. It's very informative. Might want to check it out.

I’m all on board wth this. In fact, I’ve considered looking into the Scottish Highland and the cow kept by the Old Norse. If I ever win the lottery and can just afford the land to get started, and that’s really becoming the wall for that can’t be climbed, skirted or tunneled under. I keep seeing videos that detail all the new rules, ordinances and laws that are essentially making this whole concept illegal. I tell myself and others who tell me I’m a pessimist that no, I’m a realist. I din’t care if the glass is half full or half empty. Either way, if it’s full of acid or poison, how much I drink doesn’t make me any less dead and right now I keep seeing signs of arsenic and/or sulphuric acid not water. Carbonated or otherwise.

As a dexter owner I can't disagree with this info but there's a lot of incomplete info. A2A2 thing isn't as important as video suggests, udder attachments are more important.

The wandering math in this is criminal. Yes, the Dexter is an amazing heritage, dual purpose breed. Nevertheless, if you only have an acre or two, cows aren't for you, regardless of breed. Communal animals need the other like companions to be successful. Cows need a herd, chickens need a flock, and so on. So, yes, an individual Dexter can exist on a tiny plot, but it cant live alone. <br>In conclusion, a homestead must find regenerative equilibrium, otherwise it's just a small-scale money chasing operation
