The film never implied that hundreds escaped. It implied that the plan was for hundreds to escape. In the film only 76 escaped, as in real life.

James Garner was the scrounger not the smuggler. He served time in a POW camp in Korea and was a scrounger there.

Americans did a lot of work before they were transferred and the US carried the bulk of the load during the war so they deserved to be highlighted in the movie.
