  My dad was there. He was an A-20 pilot, shot down in Italy and transported to Stalag Luft III. They had a daily newspaper and my dad was the cartoonist. He knew the ‘scrounger’ and delivered extra inks and strange papers to him for making fake passports. The Air Force Academy has the papers and much Stalag Luft III and Great Escape memorabilia.

  My son, when he was around 9-11 was obsessed with the great escape, he watched it on DVD around 3 times a week, he even went to school for world book day dressed as Hilts, complete with baseball and glove with a copy of &quot;the cooler king&quot; by Patrick bishop (the real cooler king) and I even bought him an old PS2 so he could play the PS2 &quot;the great escape&quot; game, I even customised the PS2 by getting it vinyl wrapped with a movie poster on the top.

  It was James Garner that told John Sturgess to be more respectful to Donald Pleasence and listen to him and that Pleasence &nbsp;had been a POW... John surtgess apologised and did actually listen to his idea for the pin on the floor scene that pleasence suggested.

  The biggest adaptation for Hollywood was the fact the real escape happened in March. With the snow on the ground the guard followed the path the escapees made into the woods. BTW, the reason the guard was out there to begin with was he was trying to find a place to relieve himself and stumbled upon the hole.

  Many inaccuracies in the movie, true, but without the movie we would probably never have known about this remarkable piece of history reflecting human bravery, ingenuity and tenacity.
