The hive mind is a character because it can focus. It can inhabit the conciousness of any tyranid still in its grasp. During a war on Baal between the blood angels and tht tyranids. The two sides stand off at one point, staring at eachother from across a body of water that kills what it touches. The chaplain leading the blood angels stares into the eyes of one hormagaunt and sees a depth in it unlike the others. The hivemind condensed into that one hormagaunt to personally view the standoff. The chaplain wad immediately frightened and reflexively shot the hormagaunt, killing it and triggering the battle to kick off. The hive mind of course didn't die. It just lost the eyes it was looking through. But it can purposefully look through one set of eyes to see something more closely

2:05 to answer your question. After the war against the necrons was over, Khaine, the eldar god of war and murder, got a prophecy that he would have been eventually destroyed by the eldar, so he went rogue and started killing them all. After the king of the eldar was killed by Khaine, Asuryan (the head of the eldar Pantheon), casted a spell so that gods could not physically manifest in real space anymore. This stopped the bloodshed but it forever separated the eldar from their gods. When around the 15 millenium the eldar started to fall to perversion, cults of personalities started to replace the worship of their gods, with powerful living eldar starting to calling themself “Dark Muses” and creating their own followers. In WH40k, faith is a huge component of what gives gods their powers, the eldar started to forget about their deities, and therefore these entities were extremely weak when Slaanesh was born. The only exemption to this was Khaine. Being the god of murder he was still somehow worshipped in the gladiatory pits, and this is why he was powerful enough to hold his ground against Slaanesh. It was only when Khorne decided to interviene in the fight that Slaanesh got the upper hand against Khaine, and he still managed to not be truly killed.

So, Wes actually made an error when it comes to the Tyranids. Nids aren't Blanks, their Psychic presence is so loud and chaotic that it drowns out all other signals, creating the Shadow.

To give a picture: Blanks are like sound isolation, keeping all sound out of an area while the Shadow in the Warp is a jet engine running on Max, drowning out all other sounds. Both make it so you can't hear any normal sound but they do it through different ways.

Regarding the Orks and "why don't we just partner up and fight Tyranids" - well... that kind of happened. An Inquisitor lured a hive fleet into the home of one of the bigger Ork groups on a planet called Octarius. It lasted for a good long time, but the Tyranids eventually came out on top. The problem is that they gained SO MUCH biomass and so many evolutions from having to adapt to fight the orks there that they're now an even bigger problem. Shortly after that war, the Tyranids started "building something" on a planet they'd already drained - which is scary as hell because the Tyranids don't do that. So whatever's going on is about to be a big issue for humanity and everybody else.

Side note on Khaine's death. What's not said is that Khorne got involved in the fight because he wanted a punching bag of sorts/respected the war god and instead of Khaine using the opportunity to escape, he decided to fight both at the same time creating a three way fight.

Counter-Point Theory: Tyranids are not actually aliens or a character, Tyranids are a physical manifestation of the universe. With the goal of healing from damage caused by the warp.

Point 1: Devour all life = no more chaos food.
Point 2: Anti-Psyker.
Point 3: Will self expire when job is done.

Hive Mind is, kinda, a guy - there are theories as to what exactly they might be, but whatever they are, they do have ego - for example, when psykers try to "comprehend them" by looking into psyker nids, Hive Mind lashes out. Hive Mind also hates Necrons because they can't eat them, so they are left angry and hungry - so lowkey gremlin vibes, so far Hive Mind is just constantly annoyed, grumpy even

The Hive Mind is just a beast that ran from Catachan coming back to see if Sly Marbo is still there before leaving because he is.

49:00 An Eldar Farseer in the book "Godblight" by Guy Haley says that "Where faith flourishes, reality changes". I think the Emperor became a God not because he wanted to, but because 10,000 years in the future, trillions of people believed he was one and so, reality changed to make him one.

The Hivemind isn't necessarily a physical character, it's similar to the Chaos Gods in that regard where there isn't a physical body we can see, the images you see that claim to be of the Dark Gods are personal interpretations of what people think they'd look like, but other than that, there is no physical body, because they're in the Warp, obviously there is some details of the Gods we have, like Khorne's brass armour and his massive sword known as Woebringer, Warmaker of the End of all Things. Most of what you see of Khorne is from his Daemons, like Bloodletters, Bloodthirsters, Juggernauts and Flesh Hounds, or Tzeentch with his Blue and Pink Horrors, Screamers and Lords of Change. we don't see the leader of the Daemons, but we see their influence through the presence of those Daemons, the same goes for the Tyranids and the Hive Mind.
