POV: Your Life as an American Soldier in Afghanistan (2001–2021)

You are 18 years old when you walk into an Army recruiting station in October 2001, only weeks after 9/11. What begins with basic training at Fort Benning becomes a twenty-year journey through the Afghanistan War from a young Private learning to survive military life to a Lieutenant Colonel witnessing the final American withdrawal from Kabul in 2021. Across ten ranks and eight deployments, you experience the changing reality of the war: patrols in Paktika and Kunar, squad leadership in Helmand, the 2010 surge in Kandahar, increasingly complex decisions at battalion and brigade level, and finally the chaotic evacuation from Kabul. The higher you rise, the more the war changes not just in what you do, but in what you're responsible for. This immersive POV history video explores the Afghanistan War through the perspective of one American soldier progressing through the U.S. Army over two decades. It examines military leadership, combat deployments, the human cost of war, decision-making, military bureaucracy, the relationship with Afghan security forces, and the difficult reality of a conflict that ultimately ended without a clean resolution. The journey concludes in August 2021, during the withdrawal from Kabul and the final days of America's longest war.
