What Did Soldiers Actually Do 24 Hours After a Battle Ended?

The shooting stops. The battle is supposedly over. But for the soldiers still standing, the work has barely begun. Enemy positions still have to be searched. Counterattacks have to be prepared for. Wounded men may still be lying across the battlefield. Prisoners need to be disarmed and moved rearward. Ammunition has to be counted and redistributed. Missing soldiers have to be located. Weapons, documents and damaged equipment are collected. The dead must be identified, recorded and eventually buried. And sometimes the battlefield remains dangerous long after the armies have moved on. This video follows what actually happened during the hours after a major battle, primarily through the experience of American soldiers in World War II — from consolidation and casualty evacuation to prisoners, battlefield salvage, Graves Registration and the strange work of turning chaos back into something an army could use. We also look further back at Waterloo, where the aftermath became even stranger: scavengers stripped the battlefield, human teeth entered the denture trade, and historians have investigated evidence that battlefield bones may later have been removed for fertilizer. The battle might have ended. The consequences had not. 📚 RESEARCH & SOURCES: ▸ U.S. Army Center of Military History Official histories and operational studies covering American infantry combat, consolidation and reorganization, battlefield logistics, casualty movement and operations in the European Theater. ▸ U.S. Army Medical Department — World War II Medical History Material on battlefield first aid, battalion aid stations, litter evacuation, casualty movement and the difficulties of recovering wounded soldiers under combat conditions. ▸ U.S. Army wartime study of casualty evacuation during the Rapido River operations, Italy Used for the discussion of evacuation delays and the finding that some casualties required many hours simply to reach an aid station. ▸ U.S. Army Quartermaster Corps / Joint Mortuary Affairs Center — Graves Registration History Material on battlefield recovery, identification of remains, personal effects, temporary cemeteries, documentation and the development of U.S. Graves Registration operations. ▸ American Battle Monuments Commission / U.S. Army records — Normandy temporary cemeteries Background on temporary battlefield cemeteries established during the Normandy campaign and the large-scale burial work that followed D-Day. ▸ Records concerning Sgt.
