  Jellyfish are like the mosquitoes wasps and jackets of the ocean. I use to wanna be a marine biologist when I was little then quickly realized I don’t even like to touch fish… I’m now in architecture lol. I still love learning about the ocean, jusssst from a distance or maybe even in a protected environment.

  Jellyfish are so creepy! Its hard enough to see things from above the surface, so I can imagine the shear terror of jumping from a boat and landing directly on one

  Went to australia beginning of 2025 on a solo trip. Mostly visited empty beaches but because I started in Sydney and bought myself a wetsuit I got familiar with the ocean and some jellyfish in less risky waters before heading up north. It was kinda stressfull in the beginning when I first got in the water but one thing to remember is they almost all drift with the current. So if you spot a lot of jellyfish chances are there are more which in turn increase the likelyhood of encountering deadly ones. So I stuck with a golden rule of going in the sea with a wetsuit at all times and scan for jellyfish the first few minutes while snorkeling. If you dont see any after like 10 mins you are fine and can relax. <br><br>Also never go solo unless you know the area very well and are experienced. I consider myself quite experienced in both snorkeling and animal identification so I trusted myself but normally always go to a spot where there are other people around. Australia is beautiful dont let some of these rare deadly animals ruin it but yes always be aware of your surroundings when going to isolated places. Animals live everywhere and you live way more dynamically with them compared to europe for example.

  When I was working as an offshore longliner, in the Gulf of Mexico, sometimes our main line would go through swarms of jelly fish and their stingers would come up and wrap around your wrists. I have no idea what species they were. But it would definitely burn you pretty good.We used to call it hot snot.
