  I have severe thalassophobia, just watching a video like this makes me feel dread and anxiety. But I find the ocean and it's creatures interesting 😔

  not so fun fact: I was diving in Egypt, there was a drop-off, and I lost control about my depth. I was at 45 m, way too low for a sport diver, and started panicking. Somehow I managed to get up to the surface without getting any damage. It was my second to last dive tour, I tried diving once again...nope, could not stand it anymore, sold my equipment and never looked back.   Paranoia is the default for all living things, they all fear what might be a danger, try walking up to a squirrel with a peanut, they don't see a snack and a new friend, you are literally 100 times their size or more and we eat things much larger than they are. Fear isn't just fear, its the most basic survival skill, the fearless are food, the fearful flee and live.

  <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=adhgnQRyE6A&amp;t=357">5:57</a> Stories such as the 1962 Pensacola Sea Monster Attack or the 1965 Alvin Deep Sea Submersible Pilots&apos; Sightiing of a Plesiosaur-like creature at a depth of 5000ft in the Tongue of the Ocean would beg to differ! The animals swam out of the view of the sub&apos;s cameras before they could take a photo. A log was made but was later removed.

  I&apos;ve always had a fascination with the immense vastness of the ocean. Space too. Something about the seemingly endless nothingness and the thought of what is in that nothingness waiting to be found is very exciting. That being said it is undeniably terrifying, even if it is also enticing

  My sister was allways quite uncomfortable with natural bodies of water. We don&apos;t live anywhere near an ocean, but we had a small river very close by, and we played in it as kids. She was okay with it as long as her feet could reach the ground. As soon as the water was deeper than that, she freaked out. <br>On our only holiday at the beach (Turkish Riviera), she preferres to spend her day mostly in the pool. She entered the sea only a very few times, and only in very shallow water. Even having an inflatable mattrass to hold on to would not change that.<br>She allways explained that it was NOT knowing what was underneath her that freaked her out.

  its really strange how thalassophobia is left out of the DSM considering the vast amounts of pretty niche phobias that ARE listed. i know my own is in there, being cynophobia (fear of dogs) which, as you would imagine, is pretty uncommon.

  i first discovered this fear as a child playing &quot;Echo the Dolphin&quot; on the sega genesis in the early 90&apos;s.. i was 6 and didnt understand why playing the dolphin game would cause sheer panic.
