Ionizing radiation is terrifying. Cellular breakdown, slow, but steady necrosis and then inevitable death. It's insane.

You guys just faced the reality of Soviet Union. That's the way it was. They started to evacuate people only 36 hours after the explosion. When the radiation reached Sweden, the Soviet State could not keep it as a secret anymore. After episode 5 don't forget to watch a short epilogue. They going to tell what happened to Chernobyl after the explosion and what happened to all the people who were involved in the liquidation

There was no panic because nobody was told how dangerous it was

The sound design in this is brilliant. How do you make an audience fear the danger of something that’s invisible? They did it with creepy sounds and music.

There were no provisions made for radiation safety anywhere around the nuclear power plant at Chernobyl...as far as anyone was told by the folks in charge of the Soviet Union, the RBMK reactors at Chernobyl were so safe that pretty much no provision needed to be made for any possible reactor disaster. That is why the firefighters did not have any protection from radiation with them, that is why the local hospital had no facilities or supplies for treating radiation burns or radiation sickness, and that is why so many people have such a hard time believing that anything catastrophic had happened...even after it actually did happen. The people who lived nearby were told that the Chernobyl power plant was completely safe, were taught nothing about how to act in the event of a major problem, and were intentionally not told about any of the risks of radiation.

You missed it, but when Boris called Legasov about the accident, he stated that the highest detected level radiation was 3.6 roentgen, and Legasov said in response "That's actually significant, you should start evacuating immediately!"

NUCLEAR ENERGY IS SOME OF THE CLEANEST MOST EFFICENT FUEL WE USE AND IT HAS THESE NEGATIVE STIGMAS ATTACHED TO THEM BECAUSE PEOPLE THINK ALL NUCLEAR REACTORS ARE BUILT LIKE THIS. i was typing and didnt notice caps lock was on for the start of that message and didnt want to erase it.

I watched this with my grandparents in Poland and they were telling me about how my granddad was in Ukraine when this happened and he called my grandma to tell her about it because the government were still trying to keep it a secret at the time and no one outside the country knew about it. She had to take my mum and her sisters to get iodine to protect them from the radiation. Crazy stuff.

I live in Sweden and remember this , I was just a young boy but as soon as I saw my parents reactions to the News on TV I knew this was bad... it got broadcasted here approx. 1-2 days after it blew up in Ukraine.. This is an epic series to learn people some Science and Biology+Physics.. You can say and believe whatever you want.. but none of us escapes the effects and reality of being one small induvidual on this Globe called The Earth.! All you can do is to live your life.. , and try to learn...!!

YEEEEEEES Chernobyl is an excellent viewing experience. They pull no punches on the reality and bleakness of the situation and it’s effects.
