General Pikalov, the officer who drove the truck in place of one of his men, was an absolute legend. His list of combat actions from World War II is incredible, and all before he was 21. Among others he was in the Battle's of Stalingrad, Kursk and Berlin, 3 of the deadliest battles in human history. Just from that time he was awarded 3 Soviet Military Orders and 10 medals, all awarded in the field.<br><br>Accounts from Pikalov's soldiers are impressive too, one of those rare officers who led from the front and took care of his troops. In 2 different hazardous chemical clean-ups he was alongside his men, suited up and even handling materials. He led the clean-up in Havana, Cuba after the 1981 Dengue fever epidemic, and was often in the frontline inspection and cleanup teams.<br><br>His actions at Chernobyl were barely touched in the HBO series. He was onsite for 2 months without break and averaged 20 hours each day, coordinating and managing the operations, frequently leading them in person. The are 5 separate accounts of Pikalov ordering his younger soldiers to stay back in comparative safe areas while he went forward.<br><br>"Approaching the danger zone, Pikalov ordered his driver to halt and leave the car, saying to the young soldier: 'Stay here Son, you are still to become a father.' Pikalov drove himself around the station, inspecting damage."

Keep in mind that each individual "tick" made by the radiation counter is a single high-energy particle striking the detector. When the sound being emitted is practically all white noise you can imagine the number of particles impinging on the meter and the men.

people don't realize that this could've ruined the entire world if it hadn't been addressed properly.

<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7_eQTUaeIac&t=574">9:34</a>. Tasting metal is the first sign of high dose radiation poisoning and you guys had good guesses! But the reason you taste metal is because the radiation is destroying your tastebuds on a cellular level which in turn sends basically an ‘error’ signal to your brain. The effect of that error signal registers to us as tasting metal because licking metal is the only other time your brain gets that specific error signal. Because there’s no organic matter in metal for your tastebuds to be able to taste anything you recognize. Also, the reason the music is so eerie is because the musical producers actually incorporated real noises from active reactor cores into the music played during the show.

I'm from the region in Sweden that received the most fallout from Chernobyl. We were told to not eat mushrooms growing in the area or meat from local wild boar and reindeer, due to contamination. There's been an estimated 1000 additional cancer diagnoses in Sweden as a result of this incident.

The world is so lucky that Gorbachev was in power.

The three men who went into the water were Alexei Ananenko, Valeri Bezpalov, and Boris Baranov. In a very real sense they saved the world, and did so believing that they were laying down their lives. It's very rare indeed to have such clear and dramatic heroism. They, as well as many others who cleaned up that disaster, should be celebrated globally.

So glad that people are still reacting to this show. It is an amazing show about something that is a historical special interest of mine for a reason and is important to know about. RIP the victims of Chernobyl and bless it's heroes!!

It is still forbidden to pick berries , mushrooms and fruit in certain places along the Swedish coast after nearly forty years after the Chernobyl accident.

Always gives me chills when Boris says the Germans don't let their kids play outside. I was one of those German kids and it was friggin scary. We did not understand what was going on, the weather was fine, it was a nice day but we were not allowed to go outside at all. It was just scary. Getting older and learning what actually happened just confirmed that i was right to be scared af.<br>Edit: still today there are regions, we won't eat mushrooms growing there. I'm no scientist or something but mushrooms seem to contain radioactivity for a very long time for some reason. And now think about what could have happened if there were no people like Legasov and all those other reasonable scientists who not only put their career on the table but their lifes just to speak out a fact.

In these miniseries you will face a harsh truth about the Soviet political system. They have revealed what happen at Chernobyl nuclear power plant 36 hours after the accident when radiation has already reached the Scandinavia. I was 15 years old. I lived just 70 miles away from Chernobyl. It was horrifying! Great reaction, as always!!
