If you wait days or weeks to add an excluder, you then have to go through the Super's frames to confirm the queen isnt already up there. AND if she was and laid egg fields the Bee's then have to wait until they emerge to backfill the comb with the Honey. AND if there's brood in the super's comb, the foragers are gonna pack pollen in some cells and render them unfillable until you dig it all out. I find its not worth the risk or time. I add the excluder as soon as I place the supers, and leave on until I remove the supers in the late Fall. Pollen filled honeycomb can bee cleaned with sprayed water, fyi...

Thank you! Our first year, we used it on top of 2 deep boxes before adding a super. They never drew comb there and now, you've explained it! Thank you for this clear explanation of the QE!

Bees fill honey supers when they have filled the main single or double deep brood chambers. When they need the room to store honey it goes in the super regardless of a QE or not.

I always use a queen excluder. I want brood boxes and honey supers to be exclusive. I got 110 lbs of honey off of a hive with one brood box and two honey supers last year and yes there was a queen excluder between the brood box and the supers.

Thank you Ray. I have excluders on all my colonies this year. And mostly drawn comb above in the supers. We'll see how they do.

I use the queen excluder on one box of brood and the brood was solid across the whole frames. I got 210 lb off this year in northern Canada

I use single deep brood boxes, excluders, and routinely get many hives producing 200 or more pounds of honey, even had one do 400 pounds a couple years ago.

I put the super on followed 24 hours later with the excluder. They learn fast. Never had any issues.
