I knew the idea that Blue Dragons were master tacticians and they were probably the most likely to gather armies of followers. I never connected the dots, though, that the Blue Dragon in S1 of Vox Machina disguised itself as the commanding general of the nation's military. Of all the high seats to infiltrate, it's the most fitting as well as the most strategic to weaken the empire.

In my current campaign, there is a region called the Hill Lands that is full of waring orcs, goblinoids, goliath tribes, ogres, hill giants, trolls, and more. West of them is the local kingdom's bread basket, but naturally, this region is heavily defended by forts and a standing army. Sometimes an ambitious orc warchief or a hungry hill giant will try their luck for plunder and food, but they always get repelled by the defenders. Now enter Vaegros the Coming Storm, a young blue dragon who looks at all these scattered peoples and sees the making of a great army. First he helps an ambitious hobgoblin become warlord of her tribe. Then he helps her conquer other tribes. Then the orcs. Then the giantkin fall in line. Now suddenly the hills are unified into a single army marching under the shadow of blue wings and gathering stormclouds.

This is an idea I've had for a while concerning a blue dragon and your video just made me want to share it. Maybe it'll help spark some creativity.

Made a world where golds ruled civilization. They were fine with chromatics as long as they followed the laws. Naturally they became ruthless traders.

Had a blue dragon pirate courting with a blue dragon merchant and their courting consisted of her sending increasingly dangerous adventurers to “stop” him from raiding her ships

I like how a Blue Dragon's army is actually just part of its horde. They collect minions just as much as they collect gold, so it makes sense that the minions would be blinged out; it's all part of the same treasure pile anyway - whether it's people or shiny objects.

The heart of the dragon's lair is a high tower containing a pedestal with the inscription in draconic, "From here, I can see your house."

I think you have grossly underestimated the sheer power and potential of the sinkhole. If it were to happen, players, all equipment in the camp, horses, followers, and anything else is dropped into essentially caved in cavern in the sand/rock. This might do some damage, sure, but the real harm is that their camp and supplies have ben destroyed, food ruined, sleep disrupted, and the worst of all: unrelenting paranoia that the next long rest could be even more catastrophic than the last. We are talking about lost weapons and armor, buried under thousands of pounds of sand. Horses buried alive, followers crushed to death by their own wagon and gear. You can be a cruel as the dragon is and you'll still not reach the sheer potential that this effect could cause. Imagine being trapped in a tent, buried under 20 feet of sand. It's game over for us unheroic types.

have you heard of fulgurite? i think giant fulgurite stones would be a really cool way to decorate the lair of a blue dragon.

fulgurite is a glass formation made when lightning strikes sand. it basically looks like a long, jagged rock. irl they're not that big, but making them giant to suit the blasts of electricity that come out of a blue dragon's mouth and it could make a really ominous and chaotic setting for a dragon's lair. i'm imagining giant jagged stones jutting out of the sand every which way, almost like a jungle of thorny vines.

My favorite blue dragon was one I made. He was a mercenary commander and would take the time to make loyal and powerful half dragon variations

Sinkholes are holes in the ground specifically created when the surface layer of earth collapses instead of it being manually removed. While I do agree that they work best as flavor for setting the scene, I think the idea of an area being filled with giant pits is interesting tactically. I used a blue for a campaign once where she was leading an invading army to tear down the kingdom made by her bronze dragon rival. While her humanoid forces did the hard stuff, her kobolds lived in the sinkholes in her territory. I treated them essentially as WWI trenches; good luck sprinting from one hole to another when the kobolds can hail stones at you as you make a mad dash and escape into tunnels connecting the pits whenever you are successful. When my players finally got there, the dragon started stalking them through the tunnels and flying overhead when they emerged into the pits. One of my favorite sessions I’ve ever done, tonally, the players loved it

My favorite thing about chromatic dragons is that there power and personality directly seems to reflect their hierarchy, and the roles they likely played back in the before time when they had their own nations. White dragons are soldiers, black as shock troops and torturers, green has spymasters and assasins, blue as generals and lords, and finally red as kings and rulers. With of course there multi headed goddess in their minds.

The light lair actions might be because they are one of the only dragons that have actual martial power. You don't need many natural hazards when you have a literal empire and armies at your disposal
