You got it right. The crowd is society who is judging them for their love, but in the end we see that actually girls are free and the crowd is behind the bars, not the other way round. Because when you judge people for their love you live in the prison of your own limited views

Lots of comments here pointing out that t.A.T.u. weren’t really what they portrayed. But at the end of the day, it’s artistic expression, and even if it was a marketing strategy, it still took courage at that time and influenced how people thought. You can’t just exclude them from artistic expression because they weren’t part of a certain group.

The song "All the Things She Said" by t.A.T.u. is a worldwide hit based on the Russian song "Ya Soshla S Uma" (I Lost My Mind), which tells the story of forbidden love between two girls. The music video, featuring schoolgirls kissing, caused a scandal and controversy, but brought the group worldwide fame, making them the first Russian group with a song in the top 40 of the Billboard Hot 100 and the first Russian music video to receive a Vevo award. The Russian version of "I've Gone Mad" was released earlier, in 2000

They weren't banned on MTV. They performed at the music awards in 2003 but they were banned on other networks in other countries.

This song triggered a massive change in the perception of homosexuality in my high school/ college days. I remember the overall attitude going from “fear, confusion, disgust” to “maybe it’s not that bad”…”unfair to discriminate”. I literally saw the change happen within a span of 2 years after this song came out.

The impact it had around the world CANNOT BE UNDERSTATED. Particularly in countries with a traditional conservative, religious and hostile outlook. A lot of my friends wouldn’t be here if people here still didn’t accept such relationships. The world was changing, and this song is one of the stones that broke the proverbial glass ceiling.

It does not matter what the reality or intent behind the song was. IT HELPED CREATE A KINDER WORLD. Even if it was ever so slight.

If two females hold hands, people think "are they?" but if two males hold hands, people think "they are!"
I love this song for what it represents, and the ending is awesome, showing that they're finally free, and everyone else are the ones that are stuck "behind the fence".
But I love it also because it has two girls kissing in wet school uniforms, what more could a teen want back then?!?

I could be wrong but what I took away from this when it came out is while they were declaring their (forbidden) love, the crowd in the background represented all those people who watched and stood in judgement. Absolutely loved this song when it came out and this was long before I saw the video. So catchy and upbeat. I recently added it to my gym workout playlist and realised how much I missed listening to it. Great reaction 👍👍

They had a concert with Rammstein in 2004 in Moskau
The two members of t.A.T.u., Lena Katina and Julia Volkova, were portrayed as lesbians for marketing, but in reality, they were not necessarily a couple; Julia Volkova has since identified as bisexual, while Lena Katina is straight, and the duo's lesbian image was largely a manufactured marketing strategy by their producer, Ivan Shapovalov, to gain notoriety. See in wikipedia
